ECCV | ISSUING | eBulletin #20 | 31 January 2022

[Edited extract from public address]

Happy new year! We hope 2022 has gotten off to a safe and happy start for you and your loved ones.

While there are promising signs the latest Omicron wave is abating, COVID-19 continues to present major challenges, put pressure on our health system, disrupt workplaces and impact on events and social activities.

Due to the uncertainty arising from the COVID outbreaks around the country and in the interest of public health and safety, the FECCA 2022 conference has been postponed to 16-17 June 2022.

We have also rescheduled the 10th Annual Walter Lippmann Memorial Oration to the second half of 2022. We were delighted to see our eminent speaker, the Hon Tony Pagone AM QC, receive an Order of Australia award last month.

In January, we welcomed our new CEO Emiliano Zucchi, who will steer ECCV through the exciting and busy year ahead, with the ongoing challenges of COVID-19 and looming state and federal elections. We are currently developing our advocacy priorities for our forthcoming State Election Platform and our Multicultural Community Outreach team will continue to support the vaccine program to help keep our communities safe.

We look forward to working with our members and stakeholders in 2022 to provide ongoing support and advocate for migrant and refugee communities in Victoria.

Best wishes for the year ahead.
Eddie Micallef, Chairperson

Anti-Racism Strategy consultation paper

ECCV has produced a report on lived experience of racism, to help inform the State Government’s Anti-Racism Strategy. Based on consultations held in October 2021, the report emphasises the need for measures that address structural racism, protect Victorians from its harms, and prevent it from occurring. It also makes recommendations on how the Strategy should be designed, resourced and implemented.

Multicultural seniors sharing their COVID stories

Older people yet to receive their third dose have been the hardest hit by the current outbreak. Our COVID-19 in-language videos, aimed at unvaccinated and unprotected seniors, feature inspiring community members talking about why they got vaccinated and how to stay COVIDsafe. We encourage you to share the first six videos (Arabic, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Punjabi and Turkish) with your networks.
