This week the world paid tribute to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Message from the Chairperson
In my capacity as VMC Chairperson, I attended the Proclamation of His Majesty King Charles III at Government House in Melbourne, to observe the process as it relates to our system of government in Australia and to pass on our condolences. It is important that we recognise the value of our democracy at this time, and allow all to contribute their voice to this period of mourning. As a community, we are also sadly mourning the loss of Boon Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Woiwurrung and Yorta Yorta elder, leader and activist Uncle Jack Charles. On behalf of the VMC, I would like to extend my condolences to his family and loved ones - he was a strong campaigner for justice, and will be dearly missed.
In the campaign for justice in our state, we recently learned of the 2022 recipients of the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector's Research Grants Program. We are pleased to see $300,000 has been allocated across the public sector for projects that reduce gender inequality, discrimination and disadvantage.
Recipients of the grants include a project from Monash University that will examine intersectional disadvantage in Victorian local councils for women with non-English speaking backgrounds. Congratulations to all recipients, and we look forward to the results of this data analysis!
Until we next meet, take care and stay well.
Viv Nguyen AM, Chairperson
