VIC | VMC | UPDATING | Community, News and Information | Wednesday 7 August 2024

[Edited extract from public address]

Announcing that nominations for the Multicultural Awards for Excellence (MAEs) are now open.

The MAEs recognise individuals and organisations that foster cross-cultural understanding and support migrant, refugee, and asylum seeker communities. This year, we have 14 award categories. The 2024 awards ceremony will also feature the Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll, celebrating local champions of diversity who have played a vital role in keeping our communities safe and connected. Nominations are essential to honour these contributions and inspire others. If you know someone deserving, please nominate them here.

Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Asian Leadership Summit, where I participated in a panel on "The Sandwich Generation in Culturally Diverse Communities." This topic is crucial as many in our community are balancing various responsibilities such as work, family, and other commitments like education, volunteer work and caregiving. Understanding and supporting those who navigate multiple roles is essential for fostering a more resilient and connected community.

We have now concluded the second round of the 2024 Regional Advisory Council (RAC) meetings across all 8 regions. These sessions have highlighted that issues such as employment, mental health, and family violence are prevalent in our communities. The VMC remains committed to supporting our communities to address these pressing matters to ensure our efforts align with the needs and safety of our community.

As noted by the RACs, Family violence, in particular, remains a critical issue. As part of our ongoing advocacy, I attended the public hearing with InTouch and CMY, following our submission to the Victorian government’s parliamentary inquiry into capturing data on family violence perpetrators in Victoria. We will continue to advocate for greater representation in this policy area both at the state and federal levels as the public discussion continues.

To better inform and support Victoria’s multicultural communities, we are updating our Multicultural Communities Database.
Note: If you have completed this questionnaire previously since February 2024, please DO NOT complete it again. Your details are already recorded in our database.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to fostering a safer, more inclusive community for all.

Warm regards,
Viv Nguyen, Chairperson

Hepatitis B is a virus that can affect your liver and can increase your chances of liver cancer.

If found early, hepatitis B can be treated, but one in three Victorians with hepatitis B are yet to be diagnosed, increasing their risk of liver cancer.

VIC | GOV | HEARING | Your say: next Creative State strategy | submission close 11.59pm Monday 26 August 2024

The Victorian Government is renewing its next Creative State strategy to guide future investment in the creative industries, support the jobs and livelihoods of many Victorians and support the creative and cultural experiences that Victorians love.

All Victorians can contribute to the strategy by completing an online survey via the Engage Victoria website. There is also an option in the survey for young people to select, which includes tailored questions specifically for young people who currently participate in creative activity or are thinking about pursuing a creative career in the future.

In addition to the survey, you can also send a submission outlining your ideas and comments. To help you with your submission we’ve prepared a strategy discussion paper which includes thought-starters and themes.

Your contribution will help to shape the next creative industries strategy and guide Victorian Government priorities and investment.
