Local dinner fundraiser to assist Nepali country men, women and children aiding some rebuilding of Nepal

Where: Ze Bar & Restaurant, 300 Beach Rd, Black Rock
Cost: Tickets: $60 per person including Nepalese style banquet, entertainment, music and chance to learn more about Sindhupalchowk. Gluten free and vegetarians catered for. Please note. Everything except wine and beer is being donated and all proceeds go to disaster relief efforts. (Wine and beer available separately at bar prices.)

Why: The small developing country of Nepal has recently been subject to two major Earthquakes; 25 April and 12 May 2015 plus numerous damaging aftershocks.

Both Earthquakes caused huge amounts of damage to an already impoverished nation; killing thousands, injuring tens of thousands, flattening villages and causing too many to become homeless and sleep in the open with no shelter.

What: Chand Raat Eid Festival Incorporated (A non-profit organisation) is bringing again the biggest multicultural events in celebration of ending Ramadan and Eid festivities in July 2015. Organisers expect over 10,00 people to attend the Melbourne event.

Eid Festival
When: Sunday, 19 July 2015, 2pm to 10pm
Where: Springers Leisure Centre

Why: The ‘Chand Raat Eid Festival’ is a traditional festivity marking the end of fasting month of Islamic Calendar (Ramadan) and the start of Islamic annual festivity (Eid ul Fitr). ‘Chand Raat’ means ‘night of the moon‘; that makes it a unique evening event of its kind. It is open for everyone without any religious or cultural boundaries. Profits produced through CREF events are used in educational welfare projects to support education-impoverished in South Asia by awarding scholarships to primary & high school children.

How: The festival is an opportunity for families to get together, do Eid shopping and eat delicious foods from a variety of stalls. The community groups and individuals place variety of stalls containing handicrafts, art, painting, clothes, jewellery, henna, bangles, shoes, food, toys and many other traditional items.

Who: CREF provides the opportunity for many Australians unaware of such festivities to explore and enjoy the various different cultural exhibitions. The festival also provides children amusements and rides and live multicultural performances. CREF encourages and provides an opportunity for individuals, families and small business owners to introduce, exhibit and sell their products & services to thousands of attendees. CREF, being a non-alcoholic family event, provides fantastic opportunity to families and youth to enjoy wonderful amusements, entertainment activities and delicious variety of foods.

What: Come join in celebration of the relocation and opening of new premises of the Koorie Heritage Trust, Federation Square (Yarra-side opposite ACMI). Live performances Saturdays and Sundays.

Why: As quoted in The Age, Tues 30 June 2015, Trust chief executive Tom Mosby said "This is about us saying, 'we're not going to sit on the fringe any more'. This is about us being right in the centre and prominent, and that we're part of 21st century society." A range or artists including Jack Charles will participate. The welcoming eye-contact between artist, audience and passerbys are useful says artist Robyne Latham "to move past the shame, blame, guilt, all of those things that are in the collective unconscious of most of Australia, to go beyond that, to actually seeing the person".

How: Explore from Saturday the new centre over 2 levels. Ground-floor art gallery with store provides opportunities to peruse and purchase crafts, books and music. Upstairs, a selection will be displayed of the Trust's over 90,000 artefacts of eel traps, shields, jewelry, paintings and sculptures.

Who: The Koorie Heritage Trust offers a range of programs and services including the only public collection in Victoria dedicated solely to Koorie art and culture comprising artefacts, pictures and photographs as well as an Oral History Program and a Reference Library; cross cultural awareness training and tours; exhibitions; a Koorie Family History Service; and a retail shop.

Artist Robyne Latham's Inspiration: "...[My] work is a product of Aboriginal culture - a collectivist culture. There is no performer. All are participants. The performance is at the interface between two cultures, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, free of guilt, shame, and blame."

What: Online survey to share your thoughts and experiences about home. By participating, you can then throw your hat in the ring to win a weekend at Hotel Hotel in Canberra.

How: This survey should take no more than 15 to 25 minutes to complete over a cup of tea. Responses are recorded anonymously in accordance with Australian legislation. The privacy policy can be read online. Surveyors are Assemble, a Melbourne-based residential property developer focused on small footprint projects.

When: Why the time to have your say is now…

Why: To understand what makes for great medium and high density living, and to contribute to the current Australian debate on apartment design standards, we're reaching out to you to tell us how you live now -- and how you'd like to live in the future.

The quarter-acre block we once aspired to is no longer affordable for the everyday Australian, nor does it match up to our 21st century vision for well-connected, culturally diverse, sustainable and smart cities. As the Australian population increasingly urbanises, we find ourselves at an important crossroads.

To live better in cities, we need to live smaller. However, the capacity to do so is necessarily affected by government regulation. State governments in Australia are currently reviewing policies that will have a significant impact on the way we live in years to come, and we have a chance to be part of the process.

Amnesty | They're Just Kids

There are 81 kids locked up in detention on Nauru.
What will their childhood memories be?

As an initiative for International Refugee Week. People around the world celebrated incredible achievements and contributions made by refugees to countries that offer them safety.

That safety is more important than ever.

We’re in the middle of a global refugee crisis -- the worst since World War II. It’s forced almost 20 million refugees from their homes, fleeing war and persecution in countries like Syria and Burma.

Half of them are children, who have a right to a real childhood.

Australia could make a real difference to the lives of these children and their families.

Instead, for almost two years, children have been locked up in Australia’s detention centre on Nauru in inhumane conditions.

Just this month, former Nauru staff came forward with testimony that has brought to light numerous cases and allegations of sexual harassment, assault and rape of women and children on Nauru, including the abuse of children as young as two years old.

It’s heartwrenching. Nothing can justify exposing children to this.

But there is hope.

In June 2013 -- with the support of people like you -- we got all children released from detention on Manus Island. We can give the kids on Nauru the same chance to have a safe, happy childhood in Australia.

But we need your help. 

If you haven't already, please share your favourite childhood memory. If you already have, please share our Lost Children page on Facebook and Twitter.

We'll present your memory -- alongside thousands of others -- to the government to show them just what they're taking away from refugee kids by detaining them. We'll demand that these children are no longer denied their childhood.

ASRC | Asylum Seeker Resource Centre - July 2015

When you donate to the ASRC, your donation goes directly into programs that change the lives of people seeking asylum. Here's what your donation has achieved in the last 12 months:

  • Creation of Australia's first facility to empower asylum seekers through employment, education and mentoring. The Innovation Hub has already helped over 150 people gain social and economic independence since its doors opened in January
  • As one of the only providers of free emergency legal aid for asylum seekers in Australia, the ASRC clocked-up more than 2,326 free legal appointments and has saved hundreds of people from being sent back to harm.
  • Secured employment for 49% of asylum seeker members in the Dandenong Centre employment program, and sustainable employment for over 25 people through  the ASRC Catering, and Cleaning social enteprises
  • Crowdfunded and launched the Food Justice Truck, which offers fresh food to asylum seekers in Victoria at a 75% discount
  • Secured 13,500 nights of shelter for asylum seekers, preventing homelessness for 116 asylum seekers
