MAKING | Online Human Bridges | Engaging, interactive dialogue sessions (3 x 1.5 hours each) | July 2023

Are you aged 18-35 and interested to meet caring, open-minded, kind-hearted people prior to attending the PoWR 2023 in Chicago? Are you open to practice the life skills of caring and empathic dialogue across cultural difference? If your answer is yes, then please join us for an extraordinary pre-Parliament experience.

You are invited to our interactive program that explores topics of ‘Resilience, Creativity and Belonging’ through the art of story. During three intentional and safe dialogue sessions, you will experience open sharing, deep listening and storytelling activities that support you to connect deeply in small groups.

We will facilitate the virtual sessions in intimate groups of four participants in order to experience the depth, vulnerability, and courage necessary to nurture our capacities of empathic listening and human care. The intended outcomes for our participants are:
  • An experience of mentorship and meaningful interactions
  • An open space for connection, inspiration, and collaboration with each other
  • Active participation in creating supportive relationships that can then enrich your PoWR experience
  • Where: The workshop will be facilitated online and then we will gather at the Parliament. Instructions to follow to those registered.
  • Time/Dates: 11am EST – 12:30 pm EST (New York time) Select one Block or the other
    • Block One: July 24, 27 and 30
    • Block Two: July 25, 28 and 31
  • Preparations: Completion of short multimedia preparations online (10 min each).

Prelude to the Parliament: An Introduction to ProSocial Spirituality | Thursday 13 July 2023 | 11am–12:15pm USA CDT 

Can we intentionally evolve toward greater cooperation and compassion? 

Register now for this free online introduction to a spiritually-grounded approach to cultural evolution based upon Wayne Teasdale’s Interspiritual Elements and ProSocial World’s Cultural Design Principles. Music, poetry, and contemplative practice merge with science and spirituality to create a transformational learning experience.

During the Parliament, there will be four ProSocial Spirituality workshops that will be an expansion of the one-hour workshop on Thursday, July 13. Please look for workshops offered by Susan Soleil. There are other facilitators but that is the fastest way to find them.

Help is needed urgently to save lives in Ukraine today

Already generosity has directly assisted tens of thousands of Ukrainians; a gift today will help save the lives of those at risk following the Kakhovka dam disaster and the innocent Ukrainian children and people suffering because of this inflicted genocide against them.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine involves constant brutality and cruelty. Yet certain moments are particularly shocking and devastating.

The recent deliberate destruction of Kakhovka Reservoir – Ukraine’s biggest dam – is a barbaric act that has already led to widespread destruction and loss of life. 

Catastrophic flooding has wiped away whole towns, with more than 60,000 people already made homeless. Some of the world’s most fertile farmland has been ruined and whole ecosystems destroyed. Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is threatened by meltdown, which would threaten lives and livelihoods of millions of people beyond Ukraine’s borders – a shocking echo of the Chernobyl disaster. Evacuation even brings its own perils, as russian troops bombard with bullets men, women and children fleeing the floods.

There is, however, hope amongst the carnage. Ukrainians have demonstrated to the world their resilience and resourcefulness throughout the invasion. Whenever help has been needed, the world has responded swiftly, and Ukrainians have been grateful. Australians have led the charge, giving generously to people who deserve a fair go and who will never surrender.

Today we ask for help to Ukraine once more. The Kakhovka flood is already the single largest humanitarian and environmental catastrophe of russia’s brutal war. Without help, the flooding will result in unimaginable loss of life in Ukraine through the spread of disease. Our aim is to provide humanitarian, medical and mental health aid for those most in need: the vulnerable people needing shelter, food, fresh water and assistance. Every dollar and every minute counts in the effort to save lives.

Giving through the Ukraine Crisis Appeal is the best way that you can continue to immediately and directly save lives in Ukraine. Your generosity continues to buy food, clothing and medicine; helps to build shelter; provides medical and mental health assistance; and ensures that millions of displaced men, women and children can live in safety and dignity.

We are so proud to send through our half-year update report on our activities, achievements and progress towards our goals on the first half of this year. Check out our Report.

We could not have achieved this alone. We are blessed with so many dedicated supporters who have generously given us their time, advice, resources, connections and backing to make our Elders' dreams become a reality. Every little bit of your support counts and goes a long way in helping our grassroots community project continue to grow a future where our languages will once again in the life breath of our thriving, proud and connected communities. 

Key highlights for 2023 so far:

  • We brought together over 40 Pertame Elders and emerging leaders for our Elder's Advisory Meeting in March. 
  • Two Pertame educators received their Cert IIII in Training and Assessment
  • Pertame staff have travelled to Adelaide, Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne, Ballarat, Canberra and Brisbane to represent the program at various conferences, trainings and meetings, including the The Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women's Voices) National Summit, the National Directions Group on the International Decade of Indigenous Languages and The Closing the Gap National Reference Group on Target 16 on language and culture. 
  • We have raised just over $100,000 of the $300,000 we need to build a classroom on Pertame homelands, to create a permanent home for the language, on the land the language came from. We have enlisted the help of the Fulcrum Agency, a social enterprise with architecture expertise that will assist us in the construction elements of the classroom.
  • Launched the first complete Immersion Language Nest in Australia, modelled after the most successful language revival programs in the world.  
  • We have 8 incredible young mothers and 12 Pertame 0-5 year old babies who are dedicated to learning their language and raising their children as first language speakers. 
  • We have immersed our children in over 80 hours of Pertame within the Language Nest playgroup and trained our young mothers to become fluent speakers for over 100 hours. 
  • We have a strong team of three Elder fluent speakers, 4 conversational educators, 8 young mothers, and 5 grandmothers that are employed by the Pertame School, gaining work experience, training and skills. For most of our staff, the Pertame School is their first time employed.

It makes my heart sing to see it working and growing and hear our babies and mothers speaking their language. "I think the immersion part is working, I can see my child look at a person differently when they are talking Pertame, like they are understanding already. I love my child being around the language more because there aren't any fluent speakers around at home" 

"My son's development on our Pertame learning is improving more and more as we come. We try to use Pertame everyday as well as Pitjantjantjara at home"

"I enjoy coming to socialise with other family as well as learning Pertame. Its challenging but nothing can beat speaking your own language"

"Thank you for creating this opportunity for me and my family. Just remind yourselves how privileged you are to be a part of this, you have this opportunity to keep this language going. Some people don't have their culture or language and that makes them feel like they don't have an identity. So I hope this will go on for many years to come"

VMC | UPDATING | Refugee Week, join our database for the latest updates on grants and events and more | Wednesday 14 June 2023

Sharing some updates and events celebrating our diverse communities.

We are a few days away from Refugee Week, which runs from 18–24 June. This annual awareness week is an opportunity to honour people with a refugee or asylum seeker background for their resilience, courage, and contributions.

This year's theme is “home away from home, a world where refugees are always included", which is a fitting reminder of the journey and the search some people must go through to find safety and a new beginning.

During this important week, the VMC will proudly present the Victorian Refugee Awards on World Refugee Day, 20 June. We thank the Minister for Multicultural Affairs the Hon. Colin Brooks, in advance for his attendance at this important event.

These awards exemplify the power of elevating culturally diverse stories and sharing our unique experiences with each other.

By knowing and celebrating each other, we build understanding, connection, and community and smash stereotypes.

I invite you to celebrate Refugee Week by actively engaging in conversations and embracing differences.

Let's reaffirm our commitment to making Victoria a welcoming and inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued.

I also want to extend a big congratulations to the 1,192 Kings Birthday Honours List recipients. It's important to note that most recipients in the general division are women. This is the first time women have outnumbered men since the Order of Australia was established in 1975. I see this as a testament to our nation's progress on gender equality.

Recognition matters and we congratulate all culturally diverse recipients, including Sheikh Alaa Elzokm, OAM of the Elsedeaq Mosque, Australian National Imams Council and Honourary Community Ambassador of the Islamic Council of Victoria, who was recognised for his service to the Islamic community.

Lisa Kennett OAM, President of Jewish Care Victoria, who was recognised for her service to the Jewish community and Dr Diana Cousins of the Buddhist Council of Victoria.

The diversity among these honorees inspires us all.

And finally, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing has launched a Better Practice Guide for Multicultural Communications. It can help you to improve communication and engagement with multicultural communities in Victoria.

This guide includes two principles for improving communications. It explains different ways to communicate, depending on your organisation’s capacity. It also includes examples of good practices in multicultural communications.

There are two questionnaires - please only fill out ONE.

You can complete a questionnaire on behalf of an organisation you represent OR as an individual.

You must complete the above questionnaire and consent to the VMC having information about your organisation to be among the first to know of relevant Governmental or community resources, awards, grants, news, events, programs, and other opportunities, including VMC-hosted events such as the Multicultural Gala Dinner.

The VMC and DFFH will contact people on the database from time to time to ask for their views on important issues.


SHARING | Bendigo Karen Youth Network celebrates Refugee Week with storytelling

During Refugee Week, the Bendigo Karen Youth Network will launch a digital storytelling project called "Our Australian Dream: Sharing with Love".

Through the power of storytelling, they hope to address and reduce discrimination and bias against people of refugee background, particularly the Karen people.

Through the project, they want to empower and inspire individuals of refugee background to embrace their identity and be proud of who they are and their unique lived experiences.

ANNOUNCING | 2023 Victorian Youth Fest Recipients

The Victorian Government will support young people across the state to hold youth-led events during the 2023 Victorian Youth Fest in September.

More than 100 successful recipients of the grants will host events led by and for young people aged between 12 and 25.

Successful recipients include Victorian Afghan Students Association for Afghanistan's Got Talent, Campaspe Cohuna Learning and Employment Network hosting Kyabram Youth Expo.

LAUNCHING | Dedicated emergency mental health hub opens at Monash Medical

A new $5.3 million mental health hub located within Monash Medical Centre’s emergency department is now open.

The new facility is part of the Victorian Government’s $32 million investment in six hubs across the state, providing specialist and integrated assessment, treatment and post-discharge support.

The other hubs are already operating in Geelong, Sunshine, and St. Vincent's Hospitals, with more to come.

Research shows that children who are taught in their First Language are better able to learn and understand the world around them.

Over 50% of the books we gift to Community are by First Nations authors and illustrators.

This is important as it allows kids to see themselves and their culture reflected in the stories, helping to build a sense of connection, belonging and pride.

Please donate this EOFY and give kids and their families in remote Communities access to books in First Languages. 

Every $10 puts one culturally relevant book into the hands of a child in a remote Community.
"With the kids, learning language is their cultural right. It is their heritage to be exposed to their language and to know their language. If it is not spoken regularly, it then becomes lost. MMBC | RAISING | Awareness, Support and Funds for families access to life changing donor milk

For Mums undergoing cancer treatments and babies who can’t take formula for instance, Mothers Milk Bank Charity (MMBC) supply life-saving breastmilk donated from other Mums. 

This helps prevent a serious condition called Necrotising Enterocolitis, which kills more babies each year than childhood leukaemia. 

But their current funding is soon coming to an end.

Chuffed asks can you chip in now to keep breastmilk in reach for families in need?

One recipient wrote to the charity saying: “To be able to supply my little girl with human milk, even though it wasn't mine, took a huge pressure off me. I know my baby thanks you, and my husband certainly thanks you as it saved him from a lot more tears than he already had to deal with.”

Just $50 covers cold transportation delivery for a family in need. But anything you can afford will help Mothers Milk Bank Charity pay for bottles, pasteurisation and safety testing.

THCO | RAISING | Awareness, Support and Funds for fighting misinformation in the age of AI

Halfway through our donations campaign and we've been humbled by the response. 

So far more than 10,000 generous people have made a contribution to help us keep quality information free. But we still need 5,000 more donors before the end of June to help support our work in the year ahead.

The arrival of artificial intelligence has highlighted the urgent need for freely available, trustworthy information of the sort provided by The Conversation. 
Google has announced that soon, when you search a question on its site, the first result displayed will be an AI-generated answer drawn from the open web. But many of the most trustworthy sources of information –academic journals, high-quality newspapers – are locked behind a paywall. ​​There is a real chance​​​​​ the AI-powered search engines that will shape our lives will be biased toward misinformation or even falsehoods. In such a world, open sources of quality information like The Conversation are vital.

Our journalists and academics do the hard work of researching, fact-checking and evaluating sources. Because of the generosity of our donors, our work is free to read and free to republish. This makes us one of the few trusted sources of high quality information on the open web. Please help us keep expert knowledge free by donating today.

Ageism Awareness Session | Wednesday 14 June 2023 | 11am–12noon 

15 June 2023 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

Join members of The City of Port Phillip’s Older Persons Advisory Committee (OPAC) to learn about ageism, a key driver of elder abuse. Now in its 22nd year, OPAC works with Council to advocate on all matters relating to the health and wellbeing of older residents.

The Plight of Servants in the 19th Century St Kilda | Tuesday 27 June 2023 | 6.30–8pm 

Join Carmel McKenzie, author of the soon-to-be-published history "St Kilda 1841-1900: Movers and Shakers and Money-makers", for a fascinating and insightful presentation, in which she will examine the living conditions and power dynamics of servants in nineteenth century St Kilda, drawing on numerous case studies gleaned from primary sources.

Reflecting its wealth, St Kilda boasted the highest number of resident servants of any Melbourne suburb for much of the nineteenth century. Most were indentured under contracts that bound them to their employer for several years and those who left before completing their term committed a crime and risked forfeiting their wages. Female servants were expected to remain childless, a stricture that led to the highest rate of infanticide in St Kilda outside of central Melbourne.

Sensitive Storytimes | beginning 8 June, held on second Thursday of month | 11am–12noon 

Port Phillip libraries (PPLS) recognise that every child is unique, and we are dedicated to creating a space that is inclusive, sensory-friendly, and fun for everyone! 

These small group sessions are designed for children who may be on the autism spectrum, have sensory processing difficulties, or simply prefer a much quieter, calmer, and controlled environment. 

As with all our Storytime sessions, there will be plenty of books to be read and songs to dance and sing-along to! Please join us for this fun-filled adventure into the world of stories and imagination.  

2023 Refugee Week – Finding Freedom 

Refugee Week (18 to 24 June 2023) is an annual celebration that raises awareness of the issues affecting refugees, highlights aspects of the refugee experience and helps the broader community to understand what it is like to be a refugee. Together, we celebrate the many positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. Refugee Week is an internationally celebrated event which began in Australia and is now a global movement with events held around the world.

Celebrate at the St Kilda Library on Saturday 24 June from 2–4pm for an afternoon of activities including stories, art and craft activities, music and food. Further details will be available closer to date on Council’s website.

For over 22 years Rawcus has been nurturing our long-term inclusive Ensemble to make and present audacious and innovative major works and cultural experiences. Based in the City of Port Phillip Victoria Australia Rawcus has long been a significant and unique contributor to the local, state-wide and national arts and disability arts sectors and increasingly been recognised internationally.

The Ensemble is at the heart of all they do and they support Ensemble performers to participate, further and develop their arts practise through:
  • weekly professional development workshops and rehearsals
  • professional employment and engagement opportunities
  • support for career advancement and development opportunities

Introducing SWOP SIS

An ecofriendly fashion swapping platform for women that lets you swap gorgeous pieces from your closet with curated pieces from a shared community wardrobe.

Swops sis would like to set up some local groups in Port Phillip with local community members signing up as Ambassadors, where their main duties will be to manage a local group on the online swapping platform and organise swap meetups for their local group. 

Swop sis are targeting women from multicultural backgrounds with a focus on culturally and racially marginalised (CARM) groups who are on a journey of finding employment. They can be starting to look for work, or pivoting their career, or anything in between. Swop sis wants to build these small community groups where members feel a sense of belonging and support while being able to access suitable clothing items through clothes swapping. The long-term benefit is for the members to feel empowered and self-confident to express their identity through clothing by having access to this shared community wardrobe.

Community members can learn to cook easy, cheap and health meals | commencing Monday 19 June 2023 | 9.30am–12noon

Port Phillip Community Group delivers the Nutrition Education Skills Training (NEST) program, which we they are running in conjunction with OZHarvest.

This program is a great opportunity to learn how to cook healthy meals on a budget, which is so necessary these days, given the cost of living challenges we are facing.

There are a limited number of places for participation in the program so people who are interested to join in will need to register quickly.

One of the proudest achievements is getting together with our Volunteers at the annual

The future Parliaments cannot be guaranteed without those who believe fiercely in what we’re doing, contributing all they can to ensure the good work of multiple generations is not erased by forces that mobilize politics to harm women; religious, racial, sexual minorities; and our planet.

Some say we’ve become too political. I say we’re doing nothing more than assembling the members of faith and spiritual traditions doing their best to make sense of–and make a difference in–a world that isn’t kind to most of us...

At The Conversation we produce independent journalism that aims to be constructive and offer solutions to you. That’s why we only work with bona fide experts and give away our journalism for free.

Too often the media falls short, distracted by social media, commercial pressures and the daily struggle to survive. In recent weeks Vice and Buzzfeed, two ambitious digital news outlets trying to produce quality journalism, have been shuttered or sold.

We want to help fix the failing media ecosystem so we are asking you to help fund our newsroom. No one should miss out on reliable and unbiased information because they can’t afford to pay, so we ask those who can afford it to give what they can to support our work.

VMC | UPDATING | Representation matters, how we can support reconciliation and more | 1 June 2023

This week saw attendance and speaking at the Order of Australia Association's 35th National Conference. It was a great opportunity to reflect on how much representation matters.

We know we need diversity and inclusion at all levels of Government and in all areas of community, but we also need representation of recognition.

That's why I was so pleased to see the work of the Association in ensuring its recipients reflect the diversity of the community, for our contribution is no less than that of every citizen of this country.

And while we have a great deal more to do to achieve full representation, we celebrate the progression milestones and express our appreciation for the people who are changing things.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in awards, with men twice as likely to be recognised.

But this year, 48 per cent of the Order of Australia awards were awarded to women, which is more than ever before.

We thank the Victorian Government for their support in increasing these numbers

We can't be what we can't see!

This week, importantly, we learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements in National Reconciliation Week. I encourage you all to use the last days to reflect on Australia's past and consider how you can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

I believe we need to be continually learning about Australian history and continually committing to the critical work of racial justice, equity and reconciliation.

At the VMC, we value our role in this process and what is our nation's essential work. We'll keep collaborating and providing accurate information to the multicultural community to support greater understanding and awareness.

As people from multicultural and multifaith backgrounds, we can support Indigenous Australians and the reconciliation process in all areas where we live, work and socialise.

Finally, I applaud the work of community organisations and a couple of them have received further support below.

MHWL | LAUNCHING | Mental Health and Wellbeing Local comes to Frankston

Frankston is the latest place in Victoria to get a Mental Health and Wellbeing Local (MHWL), with the announcement of the beginning of walk-in services in the coming weeks and weekend service to kick off in the coming months.

The Frankston Local is delivered by Wellways Australia in partnership with Mentis Assist and Peninsula Health – and since opening late last year, this has provided support to hundreds of people in the community with wellbeing and therapeutic group sessions, face-to-face appointments, telehealth and outreach.

The Locals will remove barriers that many Victorians face when they need treatment, and they will connect them to support – without making them jump through hoops like a GP referral, meeting eligibility criteria or cost.

Made by Many Minds is a one-stop digital platform that provides Migrant Women in Business members with a range of services including legal, finance, marketing and merchandising. The platform was developed with a $150,000 grant from the Victoria Government, with most of the services offered owned and run by migrant women.

More Support On The Way For Wellsprings For Women

Women of all cultural backgrounds experiencing family violence can access the help and support they need with newly announced funding from the Victorian Government.

Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Ros Spence today announced Wellsprings for Women will receive a funding boost of $788,000 over the next two years.

The funding is part of a $117 million package to support victims of family and sexual violence and perpetrator intervention programs announced in the Victorian Budget 2023/24. It builds on the Victorian Government’s record investment in the prevention of family violence.

NAIDOC | COMMEMORATING | National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee Week celebrations | Sunday 2–Sunday 9 July 2023

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country. 

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The National NAIDOC Committee respectfully acknowledges the now defunct and inaccurate term 'Aborigines', whilst retaining the term in our title due to historic use by our Elders in establishing this week of commemoration in 1938.

In late 2023, Australians will have their say in a referendum about whether to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice would be an independent and permanent advisory body. It would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have called for members of the Voice to be chosen by First Nations peoples based on the wishes of local communities.

The First Peoples Assembly (FPA) are organising a fabulous Treaty Day Out concert. Artists include Jessica Mauboy, Yothu Yindi, Electric Fields, Thelma Plum and Dan Sultan.

The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria is the democratic voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria. We’re holding Treaty Day Out Naarm to celebrate the final day of voting in Victoria’s historic Treaty Elections.

The Treaty Elections are so mob can choose the people who will negotiate a Treaty with the Victorian Government.

Free RATS Now Available to everyone through your local council

The Victorian Government has now made Rapid Antigen tests free and available at more than 200 local council distribution sites such as libraries and council customer service centres. The program is open to all Victorians, with all eligibility requirements removed.

Individuals can collect up to two packets for themselves plus up to two packets for each household member per visit. People with a disability or their carer can collect up to four packets of tests.

The Quick Response Grant Program are small grants available at short notice to eligible organisations (up to $2,000) and individuals (up to $500) throughout the year. The grants support the establishment and delivery of valuable services, programs, activities, and events to the City of Port Phillip community. 

Individuals and organisations can apply by the first Monday of every month.

The next round of City of Port Phillip (CoPP) Palais Theatre Community Support grants for up to $5,000 is opening 15 May for community and creative organisation projects in Port Phillip. 5. VIC | GOV | GRANTING | A new round of Live Local grants is now available

Under the fund, local councils and community organisations receive grants of up to $200,000 for infrastructure projects, while smaller grants of up to $20,000 support the purchase of equipment, minor upgrades, and maintenance to facilities to continue to serve their local communities well into the future.

Successful grants include a refurbished community hall for the Tamil Educational Cultural & Charitable Association in Deanside, a cool room for the Muslim Women’s Council community kitchen in Brunswick, and the creation of a migration trail to celebrate Victoria’s multi-cultural history in Port Melbourne

The Victorian Government is helping Victorian Gig Workers with a new support service that provides advice and practical assistance to thousands of on-demand workers across the state.

This will include translation and interpreter services and will help workers to:

  • Make informed decisions about working for a platform
  • Understand which agencies and other services can help them resolve work disputes.

While person-centred care models include Spirituality & Diversity, workers often feel ill-equipped to support people in these all of their lives. 
This Victorian Transcultural Mental Health (VTMH) reflective peer group allows mental health practitioners to deepen their understanding about spiritual diversity, which can include beliefs, values, traditions and practices.
 
A partnership with Spiritual Health Association (SHA), Victorian Transcultural Mental Health (VTMH) offering more opportunities for mental health practitioners to identify and explore challenges when spirituality or religion comes up during encounters with consumers.

Eligibility criteria
Spirituality & Diversity Discussion Sessions in this series are for practitioners working in the Victorian publicly funded mental health sector. This includes staff working in clinical and community-managed mental health services, as well as mental health programs in community health services. Unfortunately, these discussions are not currently open to those working in private practice, NDIS providers, or students on clinical placement.

A workshop designed for all practitioners currently working with interpreters in mental health settings.
The Victorian Transcultural Mental Health (VTMH) workshop will explore challenges and realities in the interpreting environment, look at strategies for adapting practice for working with interpreters in a variety of mental health settings and consider key culturally responsive practices and principles, including cultural safety and cultural humility, in the context of working with interpreters.

Participants will receive hard copies of resources developed in the project (Approaching work with interpreters in mental health settings, VTMH, 2019), including a Practice Tips Poster and Report. 

The workshop is delivered online via Zoom over 2 days, with a 3-hour session per day, and complimented with some self-directed learning activities.

Join SisterWorks (SIWO) for a one-day event that promotes different cultures and helps enhance the economic empowerment of multicultural women.

Around 700 people are expected to join the SisterWorks cultural spectacular at the Abbotsford Convent.

The 3rd Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference (RTRRC) “Holding Hope in an Uncertain World” will be held in Adelaide.

Shaher is the sort of Mum who should be celebrated for her years of work improving women’s literacy in Afghanistan.
Instead her own two kids Danyal and Sorosh (aged 5 and 4) are deprived of school themselves!
As refugees stranded in Indonesia after escaping the Taliban, they can’t even open a bank account. 
Nina has found five Canadians willing to sponsor the family as part of the country’s refugee program, since they can’t come to Australia. Now she needs the help of the Chuffed community to cover resettlement costs.  
“Every day that Shaher’s kids are deprived of school will affect their future.”

A team of incredible First Nations midwives are helping generations of new Mums and their babies thrive with culturally safe care. 
Drawing on 60,000 years of traditional childbearing wisdom, extended kinship and community care can save lives. But there simply aren’t enough First Nations midwives to provide it.
 
Team Chuffed supports this change by funding the upcoming scholarship round for First Nations midwives. Here’s what previous scholarship recipients have said, who have been funded by caring donors on Chuffed:

Torres Strait leaders Uncle Paul and Uncle Pabai have taken the Australian Government to court in a historic legal case that could spur faster climate action. 
Chief Justice Mortimer will personally travel to hear testimony from the community. 

Now Elders and Custodians across clan groups need to be transported to Country to have their voices heard by the federal court, alongside the legal team.

28. SA | CHUFFED | RAISING | Awareness, Support and Funds for Arrestees from End Fossil Fuels Protests

One of the harshest laws to stifle protest was recently rushed through, this time by the South Australian government in response to Extinction Rebellion’s headline-grabbing direct action. 
It gives me chills after the South Australian mining minister’s promise to the oil and gas industry that the state was “at your service.” 

Instead of serving the public, the state government wants to serve future protesters with outrageous $50,000 fines - 66x the current maximum fine! 

The protesters say “We’ve spent our lives being polite and complying with rules but no matter how serious climate change becomes, nothing seems to change. We feel there is now no option but to use non-violent civil disobedience.”

Will you chip in to defend their right to protest in court?

29. VIC | GOV | CONTINUING | Funding To Stop Violence Against Women With Disabilities

Workers in the family violence prevention and disability sectors will be better equipped with the skills to prevent violence against women with disabilities thanks to a funding boost to Women with Disabilities Victoria (WDV).

The Victorian Government will invest $1.8 million to support the expanded delivery of its Gender and Disability Workforce Development Program, which gives workers the skills to prevent violence against women with disabilities.

Since it began in 2017, the program has offered training and professional development to more than 900 participants from disability, social services, local government, prevention and carer workforces.



30. NT | PESC | ANNOUNCING | Launch of Pertame "Ngetya Untya" Language Nest and Puliima Conference Workshop

Announcing the launch of Pertame "Ngetya Untya" Language Nest, our early childhood language immersion playgroup. We will make history as one of the first true immersion Language Nests in Australia. 

This is a program for Pertame School (PESC) children from birth to 5-years-old and their parents/carers to be immersed within their language, culture and community to create bilingual, culturally resilient, and community-connected children, ready to transition into further schooling. We will create a nurturing environment where young children can be raised in their Indigenous language through meaningful interaction with fluent Elders and Educators, where all communication will be carried in Pertame as we run educational and engaging playgroup routines and activities. 

We will leave English at the front door and create one of the only places in the world where Pertame language will be the dominant language. We want to raise our children as first language Pertame speakers once again, as our Elders were raised. 

Puliima Conference Workshop

We are also excited to announce that we will be running a 3.5hr workshop at The Puliima Indigenous Language and Technology Conference in Darwin on Tuesday 22 August. This workshop is entitled "Raising our babies as First Language Indigenous speakers again" and will provide a hands-on-training on how to build adult and early-childhood immersion programs, focussing first on working with Elders to develop adult fluent speakers through a Master-Apprentice Program, then empowering second-language speakers to raise their babies as first language speakers within a Language Nest. 
When our babies say their first words once again in their native tongue, just as their ancestors once did, we know the future of our languages is secure

31. AUST | ILF | UPDATING | News from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation | May 2023

Yamandhu marang. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) would like to acknowledge Sorry Day on 26 May, followed by the Anniversary of the Referendum on 27 May. This marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week(NRW), a time for us to reflect on and learn about the history, culture, stories, and knowledge of First Nations peoples.

This month, two team members travelled to Weipa to celebrate the launch of We Look, We Find, a beautiful book created by women and children from Napranum Early Childhood Centre. This is the first time a children’s picture book featuring Thanynakwith language has been commercially published. Learn more and order your very own copy!

We are delighted to announce that this month we also published a collection of nine stories from nine different regions in the Northern Territory in NT Mob Sharing Stories in Language. Each story in the book is bilingual and includes the language from the region the story is from, including Murrinhpatha, Kunwinjku, Djambarrpuyŋu, Dhuwaya, Anindilyakwa, Wubuy, Kriol, Warumungu, Arrernte and Warlpiri. ATTENDING | The Yirriwinari Festival

ILF Programs Manager Tictac and Regional Coordinator (Tiwi) Bella attended the first ever Yirriwinari Festival in Pularumpi! Over 150 books and Family Packs were given away to the Community. Bella organised games for kids, while Tictac drove the Ngarukuruwala ladies to find pandanus and the tree root used to dye the pandanus for weaving into baskets and mats. The highlight of the festival were the performances and the disco. We look forward to attending the next one!

This month our team travelled to Broome and Bidyadanga for the Community launch of Country Tells Us When..., a book published in three languages; Yawuru, Karajarri and Mangala.   • Anita Heiss AM We warmly congratulate ILF Lifetime Ambassador Anita Heiss on her powerful and moving book, Bidhi Galing (Big Rain). The book celebrates the Wiradyuri heroes of the Great Flood of Gundagai in 1852, told through the eyes of a young girl who is rescued from the raging floodwaters by her father. Hot off the press - Anita has also a finalist for the 2023 NAIDOC Creative Talent Award!

In this Cultural Infusion (CUIN) newsletter, we will highlight some of the exciting developments from this month. We've published a new article by our Cultural Ambassador Wanah Bumakor on Ethnic Diversity in Africa.

MAPPING | TechDiversity Awards

As the 2023 TechDiversity Awards draw near, the Diversity Atlas team is gearing up to once again map the diversity of the event in real time. 

On the 25th of May, Diversity Atlas will map the awards for a second time in a row.

Last year's event brought together more than 500 DEI professionals and practitioners, with attendees from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. Thanks to Diversity Atlas' surveying tool, it was possible to gain a real-time understanding of the immense cultural and demographic diversity in the audience.

As the tech industry continues to evolve and diversify, it's crucial that we have a clear understanding of who we are and who we want to be. 

Diversity Atlas' surveying tool gives a granular understanding of the diverse communities and key stakeholders shaping the industry. We look forward to seeing the insights and data that will be generated by Diversity Atlas at the 2023 TechDiversity Awards, and we're excited to see how this information will help drive meaningful change and progress in the DEI space. 

SHARING | Filipino Music and Storytelling

The Education and Experiences team is excited to share that Filipino Music and Storytelling is now available to book across Victoria.
This cultural incursion is a captivating program of Filipino languages and cultures. Students will experience uniquely narrated stories and tales, explore song and movement and crack some brow-splitting puzzles while learning about the cultural wealth of the Philippines.

Our talented presenter enhances the experience using the melodic sounds of the ukulele, vibrant props and the mesmerising art of Kamishibai paper theatre. Her interactive approach ensures that students actively participate in a celebration of Filipino community, culture and captivating stories.

This year’s Rotary International Convention is being held in Melbourne 27–31 May 2023. Come visit us at Booth 613 if you’re around and say hello to our Senior Cultural Ambassador Getrude Matshe. 

Getrude is also the President for the Rotary Southwest USA eClub and will be selling various products as part of a fundraiser to support her rotary club’s global projects.

UNPACKING | Ethnic Diversity in Africa: From Pitfall to Business Opportunity

The article unpacks the concept of a homogeneous state as a harmful myth of colonialism. Human diversity is as natural as the world itself and we must reaccustom ourselves to it as our true nature.

Wanah states that ethnicity is a sense of collective identity in which a people perceives itself as sharing a historical past and a variety of social norms and customs. Because of the cultural aspect of ethnicity, which involves people’s passionate beliefs and the emotions they stir, ethnic conflicts are among the hardest conflicts to resolve.

This conflict impedes economic development, including the state-building of African states. There is an urgent need in African states to manage ethnic diversity and promote intercultural understanding.

Reinvention is possible. Through successful management of cultural diversity, companies in Africa could contribute immensely to political stability, economic prosperity and peaceful societies. 

REFLECTING | Applying Intersectionality 

By  Roman Ruzbacky, Diversity Atlas' Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. 
A comprehensive body of work in Australia on Applying Intersectionality into gender equity and DEI work, led by Div Pillay (MindTribes Pty Ltd) in partnership with Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector (Vic) and guided by the incredible Victorian Public Sector (VPS) Women of Colour Network (WoCN) (Australia), came to light in a big way in 2021, with the establishment of the Gender Equality Act (2020). The Act required the approximately 300 VPS Departments and Public Sector Entities to embed gender intersectional principles and develop actions for each of the seven gender employment indicators as part of their Gender Equality Action Plans.

The work is continually being strengthened and with the next round of plans due between 2024 and 2025, informed by more comprehensive cultural identity and other diversity data sets, should see some transformation of workplaces and the employee experience (the disruption of structural and systemic barriers experienced and compounded forms of inequity and more equitable and inclusive employment practices). I constantly hear talk about taking an intersectional approach, but what does that really mean?

The guidelines accessed from Applying Intersectionality and Applying Intersectionality to Gender Equality Action Plans starts to show you what it looks like in action. They provide a DEI and HR professional with some solid tips on how to embed intersectional principles and actions into your DEI and gender equity action plans. It's been in my digital library for a while.

For example, pages 14 and 15 in the document say to:
  • Provide safe spaces for employees to openly share their perspectives confidentially, trusting the processes and people involved, without fear of consequence. 
  • Share de-identified intersectional data as part of consultations with all groups.
If you are writing your next Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy or Gender Equity Action Plan or if you performing diversity data analysis across multiple dimensions of diversity, including gender and cultural heritage and ancestries (of which there are thousands), then these guidelines will give you a good guide to writing actions that count.

And as the work evolves, we get better at dealing with complexity, for example writing a plan that understands the unique experience of someone with three or more cultural heritages and ancestries? someone who speaks five languages? someone who doesn't see or know anyone from their cultural heritage in their workplace or community and experiences cultural isolation? The possibilities are amazing.

MAKING | Submission to The Australian Bureau of Statistics

Following a meeting with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Cultural Infusion made a submission regarding the cultural diversity components of the 2026 Census collection. The census is a crucial tool for policymakers, researchers and businesses to make informed decisions about resource allocation, planning and policy development.

As we approach the 2026 census, we believe it’s important to consider how we can improve the collection of data to ensure that we are accurately capturing the true diversity of the communities that make up Australia.

In 2019 Cultural Infusion commercially released our flagship product, Diversity Atlas. The success of the product has been largely due to its approach to both mapping and measuring cultural diversity. The questions on our survey were subject to almost a decade of R&D and have been deployed domestically and internationally for three years to hundreds of thousands of people. It is a curated version of these queries that we hope to share with the ABS.

This undertaking is of the highest national importance, as the accurate collection of Australia’s demographic data will inform all fields of future policy creation and create a more inclusive Australia and we believe our set of questions can greatly enrich the Australian Census project.

We look forward to contributing to the process and appreciate the ABS for including us in their discussions.  

REPORTING | Training Event with our Cultural Ambassador, Mashood Qureshi

Our Cultural Ambassador Mashood Qureshi is navigating the turbulent currents in Pakistan following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan. Please join us in thinking of his wellbeing during this tense time in Pakistan. He does have interesting news to share after the honour of being the only speaker to deliver training at Hyderabad's first ever Tech + Networking training event. 

While the other speakers spoke at length about their accomplishments and delivered enticing pitches to join their agencies, academies and Amazon seller incubators, he chose to focus on upskilling his peers, students and community and generating interest in his work with Diversity Atlas, and was pleased with their positive response. Follow this link to see the video of the presentation.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is observed annually on May 21st.
This day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 to raise awareness about the importance of cultural diversity and harmony, and to encourage dialogue between different cultures and civilizations.

This day celebrates the richness of the world's cultures and the essential role that intercultural dialogue plays in promoting peace, understanding and development. It is an opportunity to recognise the value of diversity and encourages mutual respect between different cultures.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is an important reminder that diversity is not only a source of richness but also a driver of progress and development. By celebrating diversity and promoting dialogue, we can create a more peaceful, harmonious, and prosperous world.

The International Day of Action for Women's Health takes place on May 28th every year. 
This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the need for comprehensive healthcare services that are accessible, affordable and appropriate for women and girls around the world. The day aims to promote the right to health and gender equity.

The International Day of Action for Women's Health was first observed in 1987 and is now recognised in over 50 countries, marked by various events and activities. These include rallies, marches, conferences and workshops that focus on issues related to women's health, including reproductive rights, sexual health, maternal health and gender-based violence.

The day is an opportunity for organisations, governments, and individuals to come together and advocate for women's health and wellbeing. It provides a platform for women to share their experiences, stories and challenges related to health, and to demand policy changes that promote gender equality and women's empowerment. 

33. VIC | ECCV | ISSUING | eBulletin #35 | May 2023

The Andrews Labor government handed down a tough Budget on Tuesday, with a raft of measures aimed at tackling Victoria's significant burden of debt in the wake of the pandemic.
Despite the challenging economic landscape, the Budget 2023-24 delivered a strong $120 million investment over four years for programs supporting multicultural communities. This includes $40 million for the Multicultural Infrastructure Fund, which will support the construction and upgrade of community facilities, $12 million for multicultural festivals and events, as well as new funding of $2.5 million for multicultural museums and $1.5 million for multicultural media.

Given the central role small business will play in Victoria's economic recovery, we welcome support for multicultural traders’ associations and investment in our vibrant multicultural businesses and cultural precincts.

This Budget also delivered on the election promise of a much-needed boost to Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria(ECCV)'s core funding. We look forward to continuing our policy and advocacy work, and greater collaboration with the government and the multicultural sector to improve service design and delivery.

Targeted, culturally responsive support will be essential to ensure that vulnerable members of our diverse communities can access the support they need and are not disproportionately impacted by cost-of-living pressures and public service cuts.

We were particularly pleased with the $6 million allocated in the Budget to combat Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. In light of recent events, it is imperative that the government takes a strong stance against racism and vilification.

We look forward to learning more about the Victorian Anti-Racism Strategy next month at our member forum on racism. We will be joined by Nathan Lambert MP, co-chair of the Anti-Racism Taskforce, who will provide an update on the Strategy and lead a discussion on how it can most effectively address racism and support migrant and refugee communities across the state.

The forum will also feature a panel discussion exploring anti-racism action at local and state levels. We invite you to join us at this special event to share your thoughts and ideas on how we can tackle racism together.

RESPONDING | To Victorian Budget and multicultural communities

ECCV has released our initial response to the Budget 2023-24. We welcome the Budget's strong investment in diverse communities through the delivery of more than $77 million as part of the Multicultural Affairs portfolio as well as $43 million for programs supporting multicultural media, small business, and education. We will be releasing a more detailed Budget analysis next month. 

MEETING | With Communications Minister

ECCV was pleased to meet with Communications Minister Michelle Rowland MP last week alongside FECCA Chair Carlo Carli and CEO Mohammad al-Khafaji. The meeting explored collaboration on national initiatives to improve digital literacy, communications and online safety to empower multicultural communities across the country to better respond to scams, misinformation and online harm.

APPOINTING | Two new Members to ECCV Board

ECCV is pleased to welcome Monica Forson and Gabrielle Marchetti as members of the ECCV Board this month. As outstanding leaders in their respective fields, they bring a wealth of expertise and experience to ECCV. Monica is a Senior Advisor at the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission, and Gabrielle is Principal Lawyer at JobWatch. 

APPOINTING | Mo Elrafihi as new CEO of ECCV

Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria (ECCV) Chairperson, Eddie Micallef, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mo Elrafihi as Chief Executive Officer.
 
Over the past decade, Mo has provided strategic public policy advice to the Victorian Government. He has worked across key portfolios, including Industry, Innovation, Multicultural Affairs and Crime Prevention.
 
He is a passionate advocate for advancing the rights and wellbeing of multicultural communities, refugees, asylum seekers, and LGBTIQ+ communities in Victoria.
 
Mo has been an active contributor to Victoria’s multicultural communities, including as a member of the CALD Health Advisory Panel and as a board member of the Islamic Council of Victoria.
 
The son of Lebanese and Syrian migrants, he grew up in Melbourne’s northern suburbs, where he lives with his nine-year-old daughter.

Mr Micallef said Mo brings a wealth of experience and a strategic understanding of the government and policy environment, complemented by strong values, leadership qualities, and effective advocacy skills.
 
“He is a passionate advocate with dedication to promoting equitable access to services and addressing the issues that are important to our multicultural communities. We look forward to working with him."

HELPING | Over 2000 people get $250 Bonus

ECCV's multicultural outreach team has helped over 2000 people successfully apply for the latest round of the state government's $250 Power Saving Bonus, which began on 24 March. In less than two months, the team has engaged with over 50 community groups across Melbourne.

Thoughts and prayers has become, like many things in our society, a battleground phrase.

There are faith and political leaders who use the phrase as an easy way out to avoid addressing gun violence, domestic violence, natural disasters exacerbated by climate change, war and refugee crises in Latin America, Africa, and Europe, and the countless other crises facing humanity. All while refusing to commit to legislative or institutional changes to address the issues. Prayer is an important element of connecting with one’s faith but prayers must be realized through action.

To political and faith leaders hiding behind their weekly tweets of “thoughts and prayers” we say this, it’s time to answer the call to conscience and commit to action.

  • The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is the President & Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.
  • Harvinder Singh Phoolka is a Senior Advocate of Delhi High Court, politician, human rights activist, and author.
  • Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D. is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst, an internationally known speaker and author.
  • Michael Bernard Beckwith is the Founder and CEO of Agape International Spiritual Center.
 

EXPLORING | Chicago Community Sacred Space Tours

A unique and interactive offering at this year’s convening is the Chicago Interfaith Trolley Tour. In partnership with the Chicago Theological Seminary, ride onboard a trolley as we explore five sacred spaces in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhoods of Chicago, learning about their traditions, as well as the collaborative interfaith work happening in the community.

Join us on this fun 3-hour trip to educate ourselves about different faith communities active in the city of Chicago. Tour guides from both CTS and Parliament will lead the trolleys. Together we can help reshape the public narrative about what it means to live well together amidst our religious and cultural diversity and difference. Stops to be announced. FAREWELLING | Dr. Arun Gandhi, In Memoriam

The Parliament of the World's Religions is saddened to report that Dr. Arun Gandhi – grandson of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi, peace activist, and Parliament luminary – passed away on Tuesday 2 May 2023 in Kolhapur, India.

Dr. Gandhi served as a member of the Board of Trustees of PoWR, a featured luminary at numerous Parliament Convenings, and the winner of the Peace Award at the 2018 Parliament Convening. Gandhi had been announced as a featured luminary at the upcoming 2023 Parliament Convening in Chicago, USA where he would be addressing the theme of freedom, democracy, and human rights. 

CELEBRATING | Winners of the Global Ethic Essay Contest

In February of 2023, the Parliament of the World’s Religions invited essays that engage its signature document, “Towards a Global Ethic (An Initial Declaration),” in the lead-up to the 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions and in celebration of its 30th anniversary.

The Global Ethic Essay Contest was open to individuals around the world directly engaging the Global Ethic document. Three prize winners and an honorable mention were selected from the submissions received by the Global Ethic Committee.
