Spend an afternoon walking together in friendship and goodwill between a church, synagogue and a mosque.

Start with a prayer of peace and reflections and then learn about some of the history and traditions of each of the places we visit. Congregating at St Peters Eastern Hill Anglican Church we will walk across the road to the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and then onto to the Albanian Mosque in Carlton North.

REPORT | MPIN | Annual Silent Interfaith Retreat | 5pm Friday 7 October - 5pm Saturday 8 October 2016

The Well of Being - an invitation to journey together in silence and stillness, with a focus on deep listening and sharing our common thread of humanity to bring peace, not only within but together.

Upon arrival, each participant was warmly welcomed and allocated separate single room with ensuite for retreat duration.

Where: Brahma Kumaris Retreat Centre, 83-89 Stotts Lane, Frankston South.

Bringing a symbol that spoke to theme 'The Well of Being' each participant had opportunity to explain their symbol and explanation in smaller workshop groups.

Different meditations or contemplations were led by specialists in their diverse range of activities. Of particular note, the smoking ceremony, bush medicine walk, didgeroo meditation and art workshop was led by Gunditjamara Elder, Uncle Lionel Lauch.

All meals were deliciously vegetarian and prepared by the Brahma Kumaris. Volunteers living on premises or helping with the retreat follow a Brahma Kumaris spiritual lifestyle.

Post silence debrief had all attendees reporting a feeling a space of wellness and renewal of body, mind and spirit.

This Interfaith Retreat is an annual opportunity for people from various faith traditions to join together in shared prayer, meditation and contemplation. Reflecting on how we can foster peace and compassion in our own lives and in the life of our world. The retreat was a silent retreat, beginning and ending with a time of shared conversation.

Annual Victorian Awards acknowledging, presenting and celebrating outstanding achievements of people and organisations who actively support and promote cultural diversity.

Recipients of Victoria's Multicultural Awards for Excellence 2016 were recognised at a special ceremony held at Government House Thursday 13 October, from 6.30pm.

This year saw over 170 nominations across 12 categories, including the introduction of two new award categories to recognise young people making a difference to multicultural Victoria and innovative projects which contribute significantly to social cohesion in our state.

Dignity, human rights, and inhumane treatment of women and girls across the globe demands that we, people of faith and conscience, be unflinchingly clear on both the challenge and what our commitments must be to this cause.

The United Nations International Day of the Girl is a day declared in 2011:
to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential. It’s a day when activist groups come together under the same goal to highlight, discuss, and take action to advance rights and opportunities for girls everywhere.
The Parliament Declaration for the Dignity and the Human Rights of Women can be used as a guide in this work.

Please read it, and read it again, and join us in global collaboration between the Parliament of the World's Religions, the Charter for Compassion Women and Girls and Sistrum Spirit. In this spirit, Faith in Women was held Friday 14 October to discuss what's grown in the past one year since the historic Inaugural Women's Assembly of the 2015 Parliament of the World's Religions.

Tanderrum (the Kulin National Ceremony) is a celebration of the ground we stand on, practices and people whose Ancestors walked it before our time.

To open Melbourne Festival 2016, five clans of Kulin Nation came together to commemorate Tanderrum. A millennially old ceremony managing change, welcoming visitors to Country, purposeful congregation and keeping all safe and in harmony.

In times of plenty, Tanderrum (large gatherings) occurred between different language groups for trade, initiation, marriage exchange, discuss politics, have a celebratory feast and rekindle honoured friendships. The central Fire is made from flora provided by host and also symbolically brought from the visitors's locales. Assembled Elders met together to open proceedings and each then invited their clan of Wurundjeri, Boon Wurrung, Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung or Taungurung to join, performing their group's offering. Showcasing specialities each clan is traditionally known for.

Traditionally oral histories recall events estimated to be 10,000 years old. This presentation includes songs and dances from different clans, a Sacred Sand Circle and experience of creation, generation, immersion of smoke offering blessings, initiations, protections. Touched by smoke, participants promise to uphold Bunjil Lore, learning history and respecting people, land and ways of Bunjil (Creator Eagle).

Sung in traditional languages, narrated and explained by Uncle Jack Charles and performed by cross-generation, enthusiastic and exciting cast of many. Facilitated by Ilbijerri, a leading Australian and long-running Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Company.

Originally a small scoping study, the Humanitarian Arrivals and Health Services research project was developed in 2014 to identify the location of humanitarian arrivals across Melbourne and the availability of health services that address their needs. 

The research was developed in response to a lack of available evidence and demographic data on humanitarian entrants within Victoria and quickly grew, taking over two years to complete.
The Humanitarian Arrivals and Health Services research report is now online, with spatial and qualitative research, key findings and recommendations for future policy and practice regarding newly arrived communities.

Australians Today documents the outcomes from the largest survey of its kind, outlining public opinions to migration and settlement.

The survey was undertaken by more than 10,000 respondents and also included feedback from over 50 focus groups. Resulting data informs better understanding about views of those on different visa types, across different religions, ethnicities and age groups.
Some of the key findings highlight that freedom, democracy and our standard of living are equally important to those born in Australia and recent migrants. 
Although there are a number of positives in the results, discrimination continues to be an issue and for some segments of the population this is highly problematic.

Fitzroy Legal Service, Eastern Community Legal Centre, and St Kilda Legal Service, are hosting three forums across Melbourne for community workers.

Topics will include:

  • Sentencing and therapeutic jurisprudence Tenancy law
  • Family violence and intervention orders

How is religion used to motivate violent extremism? Do the Islamic sources promote and legitimise violence towards non-compliant Muslims and non-Muslims? Does the problem lie in the Religion?

Extremist groups like ISIS use concepts of Islam to justify their actions and recruit Muslims. Existing studies on radicalisation generally deal with causes and strategies to address violent extremism, but lacks an authoritative Islamic response and refutation of radical use of Islamic concepts.

The Third Australasian Conference aims to explore the causes of radicalisation from theological as well as sociological perspectives with an objective to offer authentic theological responses and sociological understandings of literalist/selective religious interpretations and radical narratives. It is anticipated that such explorations will underpin the real causes of radicalism which can then open the pathway to addressing these causes.

For transgender and gender-diverse youth, the disparity between the way they see themselves and the way they are seen by others can be the cause of intense distress. 

In addition to that – and the prospect of bullying from their peers – transgender youth in Australia face a specific set of medical and legal hurdles. Australia is the only country in the world where it’s necessary to apply to court to access puberty-blocking hormones.

In an early 2016 interview for Australian Story, a Melbourne teenager described the confusion of her early childhood. She was a girl, inside the body of a boy. ‘I felt like a mythical creature,’ she said. ‘I wasn’t really real’.

The Di Gribble Argument returns for a third year, pushing us into constructive disagreement in efforts to break a conversational deadlock. This year we’re taking on one of the most intractable conversations in Australian public life: stopping the boats.

It’s time for a proper argument. One that lays out the stunning changes to our social contract on immigration that quietly took place behind the mantra of Stop The Boats. One that looks at the system in its entirety, that replaces publicity-snatching catchphrases with a broader, deeper perspective. And an argument that actually proposes solutions. As she did in her work on the No Business in Abuse and #LetThemStay campaigns, human rights campaigner Shen Narayanasamy will bring together business, government and social threads to detonate the dead end nature of this debate.

Participate in a World Peace Flag Ceremony followed by a Peace Walk procession of flags around Gheringhap, Yarra Street and Ryrie Streets, Geelong.

Gong performance by the Karenni Community of Geelong. Light refreshments will be served in the Council Chambers.

UN International Peace Day is a call for all the world's people's to pause hostilities to experience and celebrate community. It encourages family, friends and neighbours to come together and connect, whether they live next door or across the street.

"The people of the world have asked us to shine a light on a future of promise and opportunity. Member States have responded with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development... It is an agenda for people, to end poverty in all its forms. An agenda for the planet, our common home. An agenda for shared prosperity, peace and partnership."

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The Day’s theme for 2016 is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of the world’s leaders in New York in September 2015. The new ambitious 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years. It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.

The Sustainable Development Goals are integral to achieving peace in our time, as development and peace are interdependent and mutually reinforcing.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are our shared vision of humanity and a social contract between the world's leaders and the people,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “They are a to-do list for people and planet, and a blueprint for success.”

Sustainability addresses the fundamental needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Modern challenges of poverty, hunger, diminishing natural resources, water scarcity, social inequality, environmental degradation, diseases, corruption, racism and xenophobia, among others, pose challenges for peace and create fertile grounds for conflict. Sustainable development contributes decisively to dissipation and elimination of these causes of conflict and provides the foundation for a lasting peace. Peace, meanwhile, reinforces the conditions for sustainable development and liberates the resources needed for societies to develop and prosper.

Every single one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals is a building block in the global architecture of peace. It is critical that we mobilise means of implementation, including financial resources, technology development and transfer, and capacity-building, as well as the role of partnerships. Everyone has a stake and everyone has a contribution to make.

Here are some simple ideas to get you started:
-- Smile and say 'hello'
-- Invite your neighbour over for a 'cuppa'

-- Get active and form a walking group with your neighbours or organize a game of street cricket
-- Join a class and meet neighborhood residents at your local Neighborhood House or community learning centre
-- Offer to help a neighbour by mowing their lawn or helping with their weekly shopping
