Message from the Chairperson
Last week, I mentioned that the nominations for the Victorian Refugee Awards are closing soon. I hope you'll see this as a way to recognise the important contributions of Victorians who come to Australia and accomplish so much despite arriving under trying circumstances. It is also a reminder that the cultural diversity in our state is indeed a strength and asset.
This week I hope you'll take a moment to read about the inductees into the 2021 Victorian Honour Roll of Women and take pride in the diverse contributions that each of these women have made and will continue to make. With 2022 nominations now open, please also take a moment to nominate a woman you know who has made a difference in our community.
It's always inspiring and educational to join you at community events and I hope to see you out and about this week.
Take care, and keep up the covid safe measures.
Viv Nguyen AM, Chairperson
CALLING | Nominations for Victorian Refugee Awards | nominations closing 12 April 2022
The Victorian Refugee Awards recognise and promote the achievements and contributions of Victorians who arrived as refugees or asylum seekers.
Proudly coordinated by the VMC, these annual awards recognise those who have excelled through their study, work, entrepreneurship, or volunteering.
If you know a person, business or organisation that deserves recognition, please visit our website to nominate them for a Victorian Refugee Award.
CALLING | Photographers for Capturing Culture Photography Competition | entry submissions close 17 April 2022
The resilience of Victoria’s multicultural communities is something to be celebrated and remembered. That’s why we are so excited to run this new photography competition; Capturing Culture: Multicultural Victoria in Focus.
For emerging or established Victorian multicultural artists, Capturing Culture will recognise the resilience and lived experiences of multicultural communities and capture their vibrancy and connectedness.
CALLING | Victorian Honour Roll of Women | nominations close Thursday 28 April 2022
Each year, the Victorian Honour Roll of Women recognises women who have demonstrated remarkable leadership and excellence in their field of expertise, interest, endeavour, or through their commitment to the community. Since 2001, over 700 women have been recognised for their incredible efforts in Victoria, Australia and beyond.
Last year, twenty-three women were inducted into the Honour and you can read about their incredible achievements.
Nominations for the Victorian Honour Roll of Women are now open. Nominations of women from diverse communities, including Aboriginal women, women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and those from the LGBTIQ+ community are highly encouraged.
CALLING | Filmmakers for the Multicultural Film Festival | submissions due 20 June 2022
Entries are open for the 2022 Multicultural Film Festival, run by the VMC in partnership with Swinburne University.
We are seeking creative, original, non-formulaic short films about cultural diversity created by Australians with a multicultural background or filmmakers of any background who produce films that explore multiculturalism and promote social cohesion.
GRANTING | More Family Violence Support For Diverse Communities | applications close 3 May 2022
The Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Gabrielle Williams has launched new grants that will increase support and improve access for those experiencing family violence from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
Grants of up to $250,000 are available for projects that strengthen partnerships between multicultural community organisations and specialist family violence and sexual assault services.
Victoria is leading the nation with its work to end family violence, with the Andrews Labor Government investing more than $3.5 billion since the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
INITIATING | Positive Start 2022 - School Camps
The Victorian Government is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of your child by providing an opportunity to participate in a free camp program as part of its Positive Start 2022 initiative, during the 2022 school holiday periods.
Camps are a great way for young people to build confidence, experience new activities and learn leadership skills. They also provide your child with the opportunity to connect socially and make new friends. Holiday camp programs can range from single day experiences to spending several nights at a camp location.
Places are limited, so parents and carers should register their interest as soon as possible and book as soon as booking as open.
More information on free camp opportunities is available on the Positive Start 2022 webpage and has been translated into 30 languages.
