SEMINAR | Become a Carer Friendly Place- Places still available | Thursday 9 March 2023 | 9.30am–11am
This information and training session is for Community Groups and Community Centres such as Neighbourhood Houses to learn how to become a Carer Friendly Place.
Partnering with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, Municipal Association Victoria and local councils, Carers Victoria is extending support to carers by providing opportunities to connect and engage in carer friendly communities in local, easily accessible spaces.
In Carer Friendly places carers can:
- Meet in welcoming and warm spaces;
- Find information about supports and services that exist for carers;
- Connect with other people in their local community;
- Participate in local programs and activities;
- Enjoy spaces for support group meetings;
- Connect to programs and pathways specifically for carers.
Neighbourhood houses and local councils undertake specific training to develop greater awareness of the varied needs of carers, how they can better support carers, offer specific carer activities and provide pathways to carer supports and programs. On completion they become designated Carer Friendly places, easily identifiable by the Carer Friendly logo.

SEMINAR | Running a successful Community Group | Thursday 27 April 2023 | 9.30 am–12.30 pm
Are you a new community group, or been around for a while and are wanting tips for how you can improve your committee’s effectiveness? For a committee to be successful they need to function cohesively, be accountable for their direction, the way they function, and for achieving their short and long-term goals.
Topics include:
- Understanding the role of the committee
- What good governance means for a community group
- Identifying the entity’s legal structure and the implications for this
- Appreciating what makes a committee and meetings effective (including a meeting template)
- Knowing what specific skill sets and attributes are required for each committee role
- A checklist for good governance
- The committee’s role in planning and keeping an eye on the future.
This session will help community groups to understand the role of a committee, their
responsibilities, and what structures they need to have in place that provides the foundations for a successful community group.

TRAINING | Suicide Intervention Training for all people
Griefline has recently become a provider of the LivingWorks Applied Suicide Skills Intervention Training (ASIST). ASIST is the most widely used suicide intervention model in the world, and we have scheduled three new workshops to deliver the training in the first half of 2023. This highly-sought after training will be delivered at Griefline's head office in St Kilda, Victoria on the weekends of the:
- 18 and 19 March
- 15 and 16 of April
- 20 and 21 of May
Any adult can attend and there are no prerequisites. ASIST is founded on the principle that everyone can make a difference in preventing suicide.
ASIST workshops teach participants to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety.

Grants and Funding
VIC | GOV | GRANTING | LGBTIQ+ Organisational Development Grants 2023 | closing soon
The LGBTIQ+ Organisational Development Grants 2023 strengthen Victoria’s LGBTIQ+ communities by supporting LGBTIQ+ organisations and groups to grow their crucial work.
Eligible organisations and groups are invited to apply for grants of up to $25,000 under Stream 1 or grants of up to $50,000 under Stream 2 to:
- build their capacity, including through staff training and development opportunities
- better serve diverse LGBTIQ+ communities across Victoria
- fortify their long-term viability by planning for the future.

MELB | METRO | GRANTING | Back on Track Community Grants | applications open from 7 March until 11 April 2023
Metro Train’s Community Grants are supporting not-for-profit organisations doing important work to help improve people’s mental health.
Not-for-profit organisations can apply for a grant in three funding categories of $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000.
With a total grant pool of $100,000 Metro will support projects and organisations of all sizes right across Melbourne. Projects must fall into one of the following focus areas:
- Wellness – preventative care to reduce the risk of poor mental health.
- Education – activities that inform and promote awareness of good mental health.
- Support services – assistance like counselling, psychiatric support or crisis care that directly supports people experiencing mental health challenges.
Successful applicants will be announced in June.

Events
TALKING | Heritage Talk - Remembering the Present | Tuesday 28 March 2023 | 6.30–8pm
In this presentation, Dave Miller-Stinchcombe will discuss his pavement art projects based on the works of 19th century St Kilda artist Elizabeth Parsons and mid-20th century South Melbourne artist Maurice Carter; the connection of these artists to contemporary Melbourne and why an industrial mathematician from the UK ended up creating pavement art in Melbourne.
The art projects have been supported by the City of Port Phillip through the Cultural Development Fund and the Cultural Development Fund Covid recovery grant.

WALKING | Guided walk: Montague Reborn | Sunday 30 April 2023 | 2–4pm

CONNECTING | Pathways for Carers - Monthly walk, talk and morning tea | 9.45am for a 10 am start.
Are you a Carer needing peer support and gentle exercise?
Join us on a monthly walk on the 4th Tuesday of every month around the nature and beach paths of St Kilda. Every month there will be a guest speaker providing information and resources. Morning tea is included.

PPCG | HELPING | Power Saving Bonus applications | closing 13 March 2023
Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) can now assist residents to apply for the Victorian Government’s $250 power saving bonus. Their trained support workers can check your bill, ensure you are not paying too much for utilities, discuss hardship options, and submit your $250 PSB application for you. PSB3 will end on 13th March 2023 so get in quick!
If you have already completed PSB3, then contact PPCG from April 2023 and they can assist you to apply for the new power saving bonus. Don’t miss out!

CoPP | HEARING | Your say: positive ageing in the City of Port Phillip | submissions cost midnight Monday 20 March 2023
Council has developed a Draft Positive Ageing Policy which will guide future decisions about how it can respond to the needs and aspirations of people aged 60 years and older.
Council is now seeking feedback on the draft Positive Ageing Policy.
It is anticipated that a summary of community feedback and any revisions to the policy will be presented for Council consideration in May 2023.

Port Phillip Life Activities Club (PPLAC)
PPLAC is a social recreation program for retired people or approaching retirement.
There are a wide range of activity groups including bushwalks, morning walks, dine-outs, book groups, Sunday coffee/brunch, cinemas etc.
Most of the Port Phillip Life Activities Club’s regular activities are conducted within the City of Port Phillip covering Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park, St Kilda and Elwood areas. Once you register your details you will receive information about outings and activities.
