VMC | UPDATING | Community, News and Information | Wednesday 29 May 2024

[Edited extract from public address]

Today, I want to address several important topics.

Firstly, in response to the Victorian Inquiry into Anti-Vilification Protections, I extend my appreciation to the VMC’s Regional Advisory Council members, the Multifaith Advisory Group members and community leaders who took part in the forum we collaborated with the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) to ensure the feedback from multicultural and multifaith communities were included. The report from the consultations, including translations in other languages, please visit DJCS website.

At the federal level, the Federal Government is also reviewing federal hate speech laws and I draw your attention to the latest announcement from the Australian Human Rights Commission’s groundbreaking independent study to better understand and address the dangerous prevalence of racism at universities.

This week marks National Reconciliation Week and this year theme is, "Now More Than Ever,". This reminds us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must continue. We must call out racism and actively support the voices of First Nations peoples. The work continues in treaty making, truth-telling, education, and tackling racism. We need connection, respect, action, and change.

As we reflect on these important issues, it is crucial to reiterate our condemnation of all forms of violence, racism, and discrimination. We must foster a community where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. Each of us has rights and responsibilities that contribute to strengthening social cohesion. By standing together against hate and promoting understanding, we build a stronger, more inclusive society.

I also had the pleasure of attending the Africa Day Gala Dinner, which highlighted the strength in our diversity. The celebration underscored the strong bonds that unite us and showcased the vibrant cultures within our community.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to building a more inclusive society for all Victorians.

If you or anyone you know is experiencing racial and or religious vilification, please remember support is always available:

Warm regards,
Viv Nguyen, Chairperson
