THCO | GATHERING | The Conversation Live - upcoming events | October-November 2022

[Edited extract from public address]

One of the great thrills of being a journalist is the access you get to fascinating people.

Every day editors at The Conversation (THCO) get to talk to epidemiologists and philosophers, historians, economists, climate scientists and astrophysicists. Often we are the first to hear about major new research, or have someone explain the implications of a major government decision or breaking news.

It's a buzz to have that sort of access to interesting people, and as a Friend of The Conversation I’m betting that you feel the same. That's why I’m inviting you to attend one of a series of special author events we’ve got coming up over the next couple of months.

The details for each event are below, but in summary we are hosting events in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide and Hobart to launch our annual “best of” yearbook.

In addition, our Politics Editor Amanda Dunn is in conversation with the renowned historian Frank Bongiorno in Melbourne and we're hosting a wonderfully quirky event at the State Library of Queensland about an extraordinary collection of tea-towels.

As a Friend of the Conversation we are giving you early access to register for all these reader events. (All but one is free – there is a cover charge of $15 for the Brisbane yearbook launch at Avid Reader, $5 if you are joining by Zoom).

These events usually sell out very quickly, so please get in early to book your place, and join us as some of Australia’s most fascinating thinkers ponder the future and discuss the shifting sands of power and privilege in an election year.

Lastly, I have a request - funding from our philanthropic supporters is vital in sustaining our work. Put simply it's thanks to you that we can do what we do, for free and for everyone.

But we are ambitious – we have plans that expand on our mission to share academic expertise widely. That's why, if you have donated in the past and you value what we do I hope you will consider joining our community of regular monthly donors. Every dollar can help us provide access to free, non-partisan and evidence-based journalism.
Best wishes,
Misha Ketchell, Editor
