1. VIC | GOV | UPDATING | Pandemic Response

From 11.59pm Thursday 22 September 2022, face masks are no longer required on public transport or in taxis, rideshare services or tourism vehicles and will instead be strongly recommended, in line with the existing indoor mask recommendations.

Masks continue to be strongly recommended in indoor settings, in situations where people can’t physically distance, for people who have any COVID symptoms and for anyone who may be immunocompromised or vulnerable to COVID.

The requirement to wear face masks will remain in some circumstances – like visiting a hospital, care facility or any other indoor space that is publicly accessible in a healthcare setting, including allied health providers.

With more Victorians becoming eligible for their fourth dose of the COVID vaccine, it is important that people continue to stay up to date with their vaccinations to help protect themselves and the community.Stay up to date on the latest health advice and please consider both the COVID-19 and flu vaccinations if eligible. If you need access to food or financial relief, there is information available for how to get this support.

To learn in other ways about Victoria's responses:
Additionally
  • You can leave home if there is an emergency.
  • You can leave home if there is family violence or violence by another person in the home, and you are at risk. If you are stopped by police, tell them you are feeling unsafe at home and they will help you. Safe accommodation and support for family violence is available. Call Safe Steps on 1800 015 188 or email safesteps@safesteps.org.au for help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Other ways to stay safe
  • Always wash your hands before you leave, and when you return home.
  • Keep at least 1.5 metres between yourself and others.
  • Resist going out if you are unwell unless it is to get tested.
  • After you get tested, return straight home.
  • Remember that the most important thing you can do is get tested, even if you have the mildest of symptoms.
  • Get vaccinated.

Updated COVID-19 communication resources for community stakeholders

The Victorian Government has developed resources in multiple languages with information about how you can stay COVIDSafe and get support if you need it.

This includes stakeholder packs with in-language, up to date material on:

Spread the word: help protect our communities

With winter around the corner, it's more important than ever that the most vulnerable in our communities are up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccinations. Consider sharing these Ethnic Communities' Council of Victoria (ECCV) videos in 'Protecting Our Communities' series which features inspiring stories of how community leaders overcame misinformation and hesitancy to support seniors during the pandemic.

VIC | GOV | CHANGING | COVID-19 food relief | from 1 July

Effective from 1 July 2022, there will be changes to how food relief is being delivered.

The changes will connect people to food relief providers and local health services that can become a part of an individual or family’s ongoing support network.

Once you have registered your positive COVID-19 result, you will be asked to complete a short survey on your care and support needs. Based on the survey response, you may receive a text message from the Department of Health that will allocate you to the COVID Positive Pathway program.

This program will connect you with the support you need to manage COVID-19 isolation, including access to food relief if eligible.

11. COPP | PPCfR | GATHERING | Referendum for an Indigenous Voice To Parliament Forum | Thursday 3 November 2022 | 6.30-8pm

There is a groundswell of interest in and support for the upcoming Referendum for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, which is appropriate as it is a journey that all Australians are invited to take part in.
The Prime Minister has provided the words he would like voters in that referendum to add to the Australian Constitution:
  • There shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice;
  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice may make representations to parliament and the executive government on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
  • The parliament shall, subject to this constitution, have power to make laws with respect to the composition, functions, powers and procedures of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
A working group of First Nations leaders has been appointed which includes Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney and Senator Patrick Dodson, who will advise on three matters: the timing of a referendum, the words of the proposed referendum question and the information about the Voice to be issued to the public before the vote. Australians will debate on the referendum between now and the end of 2024, whether to entrench the Voice in the Constitution. If the referendum is successful, the government will be obliged to legislate the Voice; if the voters reject the referendum, a government could still decide to legislate a Voice.

Volunteer
As we get closer to a referendum on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, the Campaign from the Heart will need volunteers out on the streets of Australia.

18. AUST | THCO | GATHERING | The Conversation Live - upcoming events | November 2022

One of the great thrills of being a journalist is the access you get to fascinating people. Every day editors at The Conversation (THCO) get to talk to epidemiologists and philosophers, historians, economists, climate scientists and astrophysicists. Often we are the first to hear about major new research, or have someone explain the implications of a major government decision or breaking news.

It's a buzz to have that sort of access to interesting people, and as a Friend of The Conversation I’m betting that you feel the same. That's why I’m inviting you to attend one of a series of special author events we’ve got coming up over the next couple of months.

The details for each event are below, but in summary we are hosting events in BrisbaneSydneyMelbourne, Perth, CanberraAdelaide and Hobart to launch our annual “best of” yearbook.

In addition, our Politics Editor Amanda Dunn is in conversation with the renowned historian Frank Bongiorno in Melbourne and we're hosting a wonderfully quirky event at the State Library of Queensland about an extraordinary collection of tea-towels.

As a Friend of the Conversation we are giving you early access to register for all these reader events. (All but one is free – there is a cover charge of $15 for the Brisbane yearbook launch at Avid Reader, $5 if you are joining by Zoom).

These events usually sell out very quickly, so please get in early to book your place, and join us as some of Australia’s most fascinating thinkers ponder the future and discuss the shifting sands of power and privilege in an election year.

           COLLECTIVISING

          30. AUST | CHUFFED | RAISING | Donations to Australian Winter Survival Packs for Syrian refugee children

Right now there is an urgent need to get warm clothes and blankets to kids in Syria living through the longest running war in a century.  These children have lost their homes and are now living in flimsy Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps. Winter is fast approaching, bitterly cold and hypothermia is rife.

Warm woollen clothes and blankets save lives. Chuffed is endorsing Aussies Knitting for War Affected Kids as a community-led movement sending Winter Survival Packs with handmade pure wool clothes, blankets, toys and enrichment items. Each pack includes a jumper, scarf, beanie, mittens and blankets knitted and sewn by volunteers, keeping each a child absolutely covered in wool warmth from head to toe.

They are purposefully designed to keep a child alive during the most bitter winter.

These children receive the bare minimum in aid and have little more than the clothes they flee in.

Chip in and keep a Syrian child warm this winter!

          31. AUST | ULDI | RAISING | Awareness, Funds and Support for Voice, Treaty and Truth in Australian History

The Uluru Dialogue is based at the Indigenous Law Centre, UNSW Sydney.

          32. AUST | CHUFFED | RAISING | Awareness, Support and Donations towards Sponsorships of Aboriginal Midwifes for all First Nations Peoples | Tuesday 25 October 2022

Before colonisation, culturally safe birthing was an uninterrupted practice for First Nations women and families for over 60,000 years. Women birthed on the same Country as generations before them, supported by traditional childbearing wisdom, extended kinship and community care.

In addition to western midwifery training, First Nations midwives draw on these cultural knowledge systems, including key family members and cultural practices specific to that community. They allow First Nations women to feel safe at a time when they need it most.

When a First Nations student midwife is sponsored to complete their studies, you are sponsoring not only their future, but all of the First Nations mothers and babies who will benefit and thrive in their care.
“Receiving this scholarship is going to help me achieve my dreams of hopefully one day becoming a midwife, just like my grandmother did back in the early days on the mission.” - Eleanor McCall, Kamilaroi woman
Endorsed by Chuffed, chip in to this First Nations-led movement for the health and lives of all First Nations people.

The EEON event hosted four keynote speakers, each sharing and reflecting on their lived experience of navigating the accessibility of a range of spaces. ENGAGING | Culture with Context: Presenters in the Community
Part of Education Strategist Nisha Feik's work at Cultural Infusion is to visit Cultural Infusion presenters for support, to collect current images of them at work, to liaise with clients and help with ideas for audience engagement. It’s a real privilege to work closely with people from diverse communities who are experts in the areas of song, dance and storytelling amongst other talents.

It’s at times like these when Cultural Infusion presenters really spark intercultural understanding with others.

In September, Nisha helped Mohamed Camara unload 30 djembes, 2 dun duns, various kiss kass and shekere and a kora upstairs to deliver an interactive Rhythms and Instruments of West Africa incursion for students at a Christian college in Melbourne. During the 50-minute sessions children learnt to play various rhythms on shared instruments and danced and sang with Mohamed as well as asking him questions to learn more about West African culture.

Another September highlight for Nisha was attending a short Middle Eastern Belly Dancing class for under-5s at Port Melbourne library with Heidi Tyrell, AKA Azura.

Heidi was great with audience involvement. An elderly man who said he was from Egypt added his own vocal ululation to the ones Heidi and the audience were doing together and agreed with her explanation that it meant love – he had heard it at a wedding. Children also joined in: learning to say ‘darabukka’ – broke rolling the R, dancing and learning a chant.

           SUPPORTING

          43. AUST | GHO | SUPPORTING | Anyone affected by gambling

Help is just a click away from Gambling Help Online (GHO). Free, confidential and available 24/7. While it may seem obvious what gambling is, emerging technology has blurred the lines to expand the range of ways people gamble.

Traditionally gambling is an activity where someone risks money or belongings, there is an element of randomness or chance involved and the purpose is to win.

The traditional methods that usually come to mind are:
          • Gaming Machines/Pokies
          • Lottery
          • Scratch cards
          • Online Gambling
          • Sports betting.
As different ways to gamble have developed it has become difficult to identify some instances when someone has a gambling problem.

In addition to the traditional definition of gambling, urges and the way they affect people (read more about urges) are a strong factor in gambling addiction.

Someone can have a gambling problem if they are addicted to an activity where they cannot control the urge to participate, and it’s having a negative impact on their lives.

          Emerging gambling activities include:
          • Online investment trading
          • Fantasy sports
          • Games with In App Purchases
          • Online Auctions.
If you feel that gambling is having an negative impact on your life why not speak to one of our counsellors, it’s free, confidential and available 24/7!
