GOSO | Melbourne Walking Festival / Victorian Walking Festival | 1 April-8 May 2016

[Edited extract from public address]

Introducing a grassroots' walking festival for Victoria.

As far as organisers' know there is no similar walking festival in Australia.
Organisations already running walks were approached to be listed in a program of walks at no cost to them. In fact the only cost – apart from the volunteer time involved – has been the establishment of the website www.victorianwalkingfestival.com.au which has been sponsored by Going Solar Pty Ltd.

Interest in and support for the Festival has grown over the past few months. It's fair to say “the idea has legs”. The program includes some walks which form part of the National Trust Heritage Festival and the international Jane's Walk urban design walking tours. It also coincides with the Premier's Active April program.

Check out the current program:
http://victorianwalkingfestival.com.au/images/pdf/WF_Program_5-4-16.pdf

If you like what you see, then promotion of the Walking Festival is over to you and
your social media contacts – particularly liking it on Facebook and other social media platforms.

Feedback on the Festival and ideas for the future are always welcome by organisers.

MF | Melbourne Art Trams | CLOSING 30 April 16

[Edited extract from public address]

Closing soon after its third year, the Melbourne Art Trams project showcases some of Victoria’s brightest artistic talents as they transform our city’s iconic trams into mobile art installations.

This year’s creative focus was conceived in association with MPavilion. Established and emerging artists were invited to take inspiration from Melbourne’s architectural landscape and design a tram that responds to how design and architecture define the character of the city.

A revival of the Transporting Art project that ran between 1987 and 1993, Melbourne Art Trams is made possible through a creative partnership between Melbourne Festival, Yarra Trams and Creative Victoria.

An inspirational evening along a spectacularly Interfaith eighty-metre dining table in the heart of Melbourne.

The Interfaith Centre of Melbourne together with 17 interfaith and other organisations invited interested friends and members of the public. An interfaith and intercultural open-air dining experience in active support of our vibrant diverse communities.

Guests were treated to dynamic, witty and engaging spoken word poetry by Sukhit Kaur Khalsa. Warm Introduction and Acknowledgement of Country given by Rev Helen Summers. Acting Lord Mayor Susan Riley embodied the Melbourne spirit with facts, statistics and infectious civic pride.

The vegetarian food received many glowing comments. Kibbet Addis, Nokul from Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Catering. Vietnamese Salad and Date Cake with Butterscotch Sauce by Lentil as Anything. Lentil Curry, Steamed Rice, Chapatis and Indian Rice Pudding from The Sikh Community of Victoria with assistance from Hare Krishnas.

The assembled was coached and encouraged in the art of Interfaith Conversation by Monique Toohey. Just in case we'd missed the wonderful conversation starters at the back of the program and felt shy.

Throughout the meal, inspiring music was provided by Zak Wilson (guitar) and Rasheeda Cooper (tabla) with later set by Zourouna: Yucal Ashkar (oud), Byron Tryandafillidas (bouzouki) and George El-Azar (daf).

A result of many young and old hands making Light work. This cooperative and inviting example of faiths, governments and enterprises working together achieved a well-considered and enthusiastic support from participants and curious onlookers. Organisers encouraged us to ask awkward questions of each other and instantly update social media accounts with photos and responses while at the table. Spread the words "Love of the good, love of the neighbour."

On behalf of Buddhist Council Victoria Interfaith (bINTER) and Glen Eira Interfaith Network (GEIFN), thankyou for having us at this place to take part in this dynamic collection of speakers, performers, servers, organisation, skilful programming, food and leadership, received with gratitude.

Who: Manningham Interfaith Network and Victorian Police: It was back in 2014 when the Manningham Interfaith Network and the Victorian Police got together to run the first Manningham Respect Round Robin. The aim was simple, do something fun that could bring together young people from all backgrounds, cultures and religions. By fostering more understanding of and respect for difference our community can grow stronger and better together.

Why: Sport, more specifically soccer (football), seemed the most natural way to do it. Sport encourages collaboration and teamwork, promotes fairness and togetherness, creates opportunities for new friendships and connections. It challenges assumptions, prejudices and sterotypes, bringing people together who might not otherwise get the chance.

Registration: Participant registration essential for kids clinic and round robin.

the day will be full of great family fun, surprises, giveaways, door prizes
-- A cultural exhibition gave a glimpse into participating cultures in this multicultural municipality. Featuring key panels from the Immigration Museum “Beyond the postcard image...Mauritians & Rodriguans in Victoria”

The diverse program included engaging speeches, uplifting brass band music, Congo dancing, Awakening Meditation and Egyptian Drummers with Accompanying Belly Dancer. A communal artwork demonstrating how we individually stitch together communities and free massage, plus dress like an Egyptian are but three examples of off-stage events.

One world, one family together temporarily for this day, a celebration of superficial difference and deeper commonality. Audience feedback teased out deeper responses not immediately apparent but a collective feeling of positive transformation had occurred.

A resilient and determined migrant minority worked tirelessly to overcome usual Organiser's Obstacles to give this gift to their local community. The collaborative and inviting approach sets a high benchmark.

On behalf of Buddhist Council Victoria Interfaith (bINTER) and Glen Eira Interfaith Network (GEIFN), thankyou for having us at your place to take part in this inspired collection of speakers, skilful organisation, skilful programming, food and leadership, received with gratitude.
