SCREENING | Friends of Suai Film Night Fundraiser | Thursday 10 August 2023 | start approx. 6-6.30pm

In Rachel’s Farm, film director and actor Rachel Ward voyages from her own wilful ignorance about the ecological impacts of conventional agriculture, to championing a movement to restore the health of our farmland, food, and climate and in doing so, the wellbeing of the farming communities that sustain the nation, and ourselves.

All funds raised will support the With One Seed carbon forestry program in Covalima, and support subsistence farmers in Timor-Leste to grow and maintain trees.

SCREENING | The Lost City Film – Port Phillip Heritage Program | Tuesday 29 August 2023 | from 6–8pm

Emerald Hill Library and Port Phillip Heritage Centre are hosting a second screening of The Lost City of Melbourne as part of the heritage programming. This screening is repeated because of popular demand.

The attempted ‘modernisation’ of Melbourne in the 1950s destroyed much of the city, including its elegant cinemas and picture palaces. Now, a new Melbourne-made documentary brings them back to life.

As Melbourne grew, it became an epicentre of film culture and its hotels, restaurants and cafes became world renowned. Coupled with the city’s grand Victorian architecture, it was a first-class destination for travellers. But, in the 1950s, with the impending Olympic Games, Melburnians felt embarrassed about how they’d be perceived on the world stage. Our buildings were deemed too Victorian, the opposite of a modern metropolis and Whelan The Wrecker’s demolition blitz began.

The Lost City of Melbourne is a celebration not just of Melbourne’s beloved, bygone picture palaces, but also of its enduring relationship to the cinema itself.
  • Where: Emerald Hill Library & Port Phillip Heritage Centre, 195 Bank Street, South Melbourne.
  • Bookings: essential, online through Trybooking
