From Community Voices to Collective Action

I am excited to begin this update by sharing an important milestone for Victoria's multicultural and multifaith communities. The Multicultural Victoria Amendment (Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria) Bill 2026 has now passed parliament. 

From 1 October 2026, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Multicultural Affairs will merge to form a new independent entity, Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria. This marks a significant step forward in how the Victorian Government engages with multicultural and multifaith Victorians, recognising the invaluable social, cultural and economic contributions that communities make to our state every day. 
As we look ahead to this new chapter, I have been reminded over recent weeks of the strength, resilience and diversity that continue to define communities across Victoria. 

On Monday 31 August, the Victorian Multicultural Commission joined Victoria’s Nepali community at a candlelight vigil, standing together in support and solidarity following the devastating floods in Nepal. The floods have brought immense loss and suffering to many families and communities. Our thoughts remain with those who have lost loved ones, and with everyone continuing to recover from this tragedy.

This sense of connection was also present at the South Sudanese Women's Conference, where I joined women leaders, advocates and community members from Victoria. The conference highlighted the power of unity and collaboration, demonstrating how shared experiences can inspire collective action. When our communities feel empowered, we can create inclusive, culturally responsive solutions that are grounded in lived experience.

The VMC partnered recently with Blacksand Pictures to consult with members of Victoria’s African Australian community on media representation and storytelling. This work completes the recent release of Tastes of Africa (EP1, 16 mins), a new three-part online documentary series celebrating Melbourne’s African communities. I encourage you to view the series and learn more about the rich contribution our African communities make to Victoria.

Storytelling sits at the heart of the Multicultural Film Festival, an annual celebration of diversity through film. The festival kicks off on Friday 18 September at St Arnaud Community Cinema at 4.30pm. I hope to see you there. 

Finally, the Multicultural Business Skills Fund Grant Program has opened! This Program will support business associations to educate, inform and upskill multicultural small business owners and their staff, enable business and operational improvements, and build connections across Victoria’s multicultural businesses. Applications are due by Monday 28 September 2026 and I encourage eligible organisations to consider applying.

TOURING | Multicultural Film Festival to St Arnaud Community Cinema 

Tickets for the Multicultural Film Festival Tour screening in St Arnaud, situated in the Northern Grampians Shire, are on sale now!

The Multicultural Film (MFF) celebrates migrant and refugee stories through a series of short films that share experiences of multiculturalism in Australia. 

This event is delivered in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology, SBS and the Northern Grampians Shire Council. 
 

VIC | GOV | GRANTING | Skills Fund Grant Program

Grants of $5,000 are available for business associations to help multicultural small business owners and their workers build their business skills. The funding can be used to deliver projects that provide business advice, training and mentorship. 

Eligible activities include training, short courses, and facilitated business learning, such as in-person workshops and online webinars, information sharing including in-language resource development and business mentoring.

The Multicultural Business Skills Fund is an initiative under the Victorian Government's Supporting our multicultural Traders and Precincts commitment. 

WATCHING | The Tastes of Africa

Tastes of Africa, a new three-part YouTube series hosted by journalist and filmmaker Santilla Chingaipe, explores the food, culture and stories of Melbourne's African-Australian community. The show is created and produced by Kauthar Abdulalim of Blacksand Pictures, written and directed by Rendah Haj and edited by Kalu Oji. Kauthar, Rendah and Santilla's perspectives have been central to shaping the creative approach and tone of the series.

While the series explores food, it captures the migration, memory, belonging and the survival stories behind these dishes. African food in Australia is evolving alongside new generations and communities, and this engaging documentary series showcases this. It is free to watch on YouTube.

VIC | GOV | REMINDING | Half price and contactless travel

Public transport in Victoria is half price for all passengers until 1 January 2027.

Transport Victoria has also rolled out contactless payment across trams and train stations where myki is accepted, for full fare customers only. Concession card holders should keep using their concession myki to ensure they are charged the correct fare.

CALD2LEAD is a not for profit that support CALD women in their leadership and board journeys. 

CALD2LEAD are hosting an event on Friday 18 September at 5.30pm on Leading with Confidence: Finding your Voice. The event will bring together CALD community members for an interactive evening of leadership, connection and inspiration.

Join Multicultural Youth Awards (MYA) as we honour the stories, achievements and impact of multicultural young people across Australia.

Nominations for the 2026 Multicultural Youth Awards have officially closed, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to put forward a young person whose story, leadership and contribution deserves to be celebrated.  Each nomination represents someone’s belief in a young person - their hard work, their journey, their impact and their future.
 
Our team is now preparing nominations for review by the 2026 Multicultural Youth Awards judging panel.
The judging panel will carefully assess shortlisted nominations across the award categories, recognising young people aged 16 to 25 who are creating impact across leadership, community service, sport, education, arts and culture, advocacy, entrepreneurship, volunteering and more.
Finalists will be notified next week, with results and further details.

Last year, the Awards brought together over 280+ young people, families, community leaders, stakeholders and supporters for a powerful evening of recognition and storytelling at Parliament House Victoria.

WORLD | PWR | REFLECTING | Upon A Season of Creation: Standing Together for Our Common Home

As the Season of Creation begins, Parliament of the World’s Religions (PWR) stands in solidarity with communities affected by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia, the devastating floods in Nepal, and the many other disasters occurring around the world – disasters that often remain unseen, unreported, or largely unknown beyond the communities experiencing them.

Climate Action Working Group remember those who have lost their lives, those searching for loved ones, families who have lost their homes and livelihoods, and communities struggling to recover. We also recognize the countless acts of courage, compassion, and solidarity that emerge in the midst of suffering.

The Season of Creation is an annual ecumenical observance held from Creation Day, celebrated on September 1st to October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, when Christians around the world come together in prayer to give thanks to God for His act of creation, to repent for the sins that have committed against His creation, and to love and protect what is His. It is the time for a spiritual ecological conversion when we renew our relationship with creation, recognizing that through Him, and with Him, and in Him, we are profoundly united with all that is His, recognizing that everything is interconnected as one sacred communion.

While rooted in the Christian tradition, the invitation of the Season of Creation reaches beyond Christianity. The care of our common home, concern for future generations, and responsibility toward the vulnerable are values shared by the world’s religious, spiritual and ethical traditions, as well as by people who identify with no religious tradition.

This year’s theme, “Living Water,” offers a simple and powerful reminder: water is life. Rivers, lakes, oceans, rain and glaciers sustain people, communities and ecosystems. Their protection is a responsibility we share.

Recent disasters remind us that behind every headline are real people, families, and communities whose suffering may never make the news. Their stories matter. Their lives matter. For the Parliament of the World’s Religions, solidarity knows no borders, religions, cultures, or nationalities. In moments of crisis, our shared humanity calls us to see suffering, accompany those affected, and work together for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world.

In the spirit of the Global Ethic, we affirm that humanity cannot flourish while the Earth and its most vulnerable communities suffer.

We invite people of every faith and worldview to use this Season of Creation as an opportunity to pause, listen, stand in solidarity and act.
Let us care for the Earth.
Let us stand with those who suffer.
Let us protect the most vulnerable.
Let us turn compassion into action.
The climate and ecological crisis cannot be addressed by one religion, one nation or one community alone. It calls us to build bridges across our differences and draw upon wisdom, moral courage and shared values of humanity.

At the Parliament of the World’s Religions, we believe our diversity can become a source of wisdom, cooperation and hope.

In a world where so much suffering can remain unseen, let us choose to see, to care, and to act.

Together, let us protect the home we all share.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Premier’s Multicultural Gala Dinner over the weekend. 

This year’s theme, Stories of Us, was a fitting celebration of the people, cultures and experiences that together tell the story of multicultural Victoria. I particularly valued the many conversations I had throughout the evening and look forward to continuing those conversations as I get out and about across our communities.

Those conversations are particularly important as we look to the future of multicultural Victoria. The Multicultural Victoria Amendment Bill is currently progressing through Parliament and, subject to its passage, will establish Multicultural Victoria. This represents an important opportunity to strengthen how government listens to and works alongside multicultural and multifaith communities, and I look forward to keeping you updated as this work progresses.

Having our voices heard also means making sure our communities are counted. There is still time to complete the 2026 Census, and I encourage anyone who has not yet done so to take part. Every response helps build a clearer picture of who we are and the communities that make up Australia. You can complete the Census online, on paper or with assistance. 

Finally, there are two current funding opportunities I encourage community organisations to explore. The Local Anti Racism Initiatives Grants Program provides grants of up to $40,000 for community led responses to racism, with applications closing at midday on 27 August. The Multicultural Festivals and Events Program is also open, supporting multicultural communities to celebrate and share culture through festivals and events, with applications closing on 31 August.

VIC | GOV | GRANTING | Local Anti-Racism Initiatives (LARI) grant program | applications close midday Thursday 27 August 2026

Forming a part of Victoria’s Anti-Racism Strategy, the program offers community organisations grants of up to $40,000 to deliver anti-racism programs.

The funding will support First Peoples, multicultural and multifaith organisations to deliver tailored programs and activities that meet the needs of their local communities. While eliminating racism in Victoria is everyone’s responsibility, First Peoples, multicultural and multifaith communities have the expertise, lived experience and specialised knowledge to effectively deliver community-driven responses to racism.

VIC | GOV | GRANTING | 2026-27 Multicultural Festivals and Events (MFE) and Regional Multicultural Festivals and Events Fund (RMFEF) grant programs – Round 2 | applications close 31 August 2026

Organisations can apply for up to $50,000 to host festivals and events that celebrate Victoria’s cultural diversity. Funding is available in small, medium or large streams.  

This program aims to connect communities by making it easier for Victorians from multicultural and multifaith backgrounds to come together and celebrate their heritage and traditions.

VIC | GOV | GRANTING | 20% off vehicle registration | until 31 August 2026

The Victorian Government’s 20% off vehicle registration rebate has been extended.

If you live in Victoria and own a vehicle, you can get 20% back on your vehicle registration for the 2025-26 financial year. You could receive up to $186 per vehicle.

To apply for the rebate, you must have a Service Victoria account and apply online through Service Victoria. If you do not have a Service Victoria account, you can create one now through the Service Victoria app or website.

VIC | TRVI | OFFERING | Half price for everyone until 1 January 2027 and contactless travel

Public transport in Victoria is half price. Half price fares apply automatically to all public transport services statewide and to all passengers, including concession holders.

Transport Victoria (TRVI) has also rolled out contactless payment across trams and train stations where myki is accepted, for full fare customers only. Concession card holders should keep using their concession myki to ensure they are charged the correct fare.

If you are a concession card holder and accidentally tap on with a phone or bank card, wait 30 seconds and tap off with the same device so you are not charged. Any customers who make a mistake and are incorrectly charged should contact the Transport Victoria Contact Centre on 1800 800 007 to discuss reimbursement options.

Nominations are open for the 2026 Multicultural Youth Awards (MYA), a national celebration of the leadership, creativity and resilience of multicultural youth aged 16–25 across Australia. 

With 13 exciting award categories, MYA recognises young people driving change in education, community leadership, arts, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and more.

These Scanlon Foundation  (SCFO) community grans will provide up to $50,000 per year, for two years, for projects that foster connections and strengthen communities by engaging local businesses with potential employees living in their area.

CELEBRATING | 2023 Anniversary

Three years ago this week, more than 8,000 people representing over 200 faith traditions responded to a call to conscience and gathered in Chicago for the 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions. These people brought diverse experiences and perspectives and engaged with spiritual and political leaders from around the world. They also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Parliament’s foundational document, “Towards A Global Ethic.” Re-live the 2023 Parliament on our YouTube channel.

LAUNCHING | Trustees Corner

We are excited to announce the launch of Trustees Corner, a blog with posts written by current members of the Parliament of the World's Religions Board of Trustees. Look for new Trustees Corner posts in every newsletter.

In a fractured world, the work of interreligious engagement is not only about dialogue, representation, or public witness. It is also about formation: the shaping of attention, habits, relationships, and institutional norms that teach people what to expect from one another and what to believe about human dignity.

One way I have come to understand this work is through the language of beauty, an area I am writing about professionally this year. By beauty, I do not mean ornament, sentiment, or aesthetic preference. I mean something closer to a moral and spiritual condition: those patterns of life in whose presence human beings become more alive, more recognizable to one another, and more capable of inhabiting a shared world.
I still remember the extraordinary enthusiasm when the 2015 Parliament of the World’s Religions ratified the Declaration for the Dignity and Human Rights of Women. The world’s religions spoke with one voice, affirming that “being treated justly and with respect should not depend on whether one is male or female.” We recognized that “we are all interconnected and interdependent and when half the human race suffers, we all suffer.” And we called upon the world’s religions to honor and uphold the dignity and human rights of women and girls.

The Multicultural Youth Awards celebrate young people aged 16 to 25 from multicultural, migrant, refugee and diverse cultural backgrounds who are making a meaningful impact across their communities.

Whether they are leading in the classroom, volunteering behind the scenes, excelling in sport or the arts, advocating for change, supporting their family, building something new, or simply showing others what is possible, their story deserves to be celebrated.

The Hon. Ben Carroll MP, Premier of Victoria announced the appointment of Hon. Paul Edbrooke MP as the new Minister for Multicultural Affairs, taking over from Ingrid Stitt MP last week. 

On behalf of the VMC, I would like to welcome Minister Edbrooke to this critically important portfolio. With experience as a firefighter and teacher, Minister Edbrooke previously held the portfolios for Consumer Affairs, Cost of Living, Renters and Men and Boys and before that was parliamentary secretary to the Treasurer and Minister for Mental Health. 

I thank Ingrid Stitt MP for her tireless work as Minister for Multicultural and Multifaith Victoria since October 2023 and for all she has achieved for multicultural communities. I wish her all the best as Minister under her revised portfolios.
Recently, I spoke at an information session delivered by the VMC in partnership with Mortgage Stress Victoria. One of the most significant concerns we hear from communities across Victoria is about cost-of-living pressures and affordable housing. For many migrants and refugees, owning a home represents security, stability and hope for the future. But for many, the dream of owning a home turns into heavy mortgage stress. Last week’s information session emphasised that help is available for those in need and that issues can be tackled before problems become crises. 
If you've been following passage of the Multicultural Victoria Amendment Bill 2026, you can read the second reading speech and stay updated on its passage through Parliament here. The Bill seeks to establish a new entity, Multicultural Victoria, to bring together what we hear in communities with the development of policies and programs across government. I hope to provide further updates on the Bill in a subsequent newsletter.

Positive Change Ahead for our Communities

It is a privilege to write to you for the first time as Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission.

I am honoured to have the opportunity to serve our multicultural and multifaith communities. I look forward to meeting many of you over the months ahead, listening to your experiences and learning from the people and organisations who contribute so much to our state every day.

This is an exciting time for multicultural Victoria.

This week, the Bill to amend the Multicultural Victoria Act was introduced into the Victorian Parliament. The Bill seeks to establish Multicultural Victoria, creating opportunities to strengthen the way government listens to, engages with and supports multicultural and multifaith communities. I look forward to helping build an organisation that reflects the aspirations and diversity of the communities we serve, prioritising a recalibrated and coordinated approach that promotes cohesion, equity and inclusion though legislation, policies, programs and partnerships. 
As part of this transition, applications are now open for a range of leadership opportunities, including membership of the new Multicultural Community Advisory Group. This is a unique opportunity for community leaders to contribute their experience, insights and perspectives, helping ensure community voices remain central to the future direction of Multicultural Victoria. I encourage anyone with the passion and commitment for shaping Victoria's multicultural future to consider applying. 
As we begin this journey, I look forward to getting out into communities across Victoria, meeting many of you in person and learning more about your work, your aspirations and the issues that matter most to you. Together, we can continue building a Victoria where every community feels heard, valued and connected.

VIC | TRVI | OFFERING | Half price and contactless travel

Public transport in Victoria is half price for everyone until 1 January 2027. Half price fares apply automatically to all public transport services statewide and to all passengers, including concession holders.

In addition, Transport Victoria (TRVI) has recently rolled out contactless payment options across the tram network and at train stations where myki is accepted.

Contactless payment is currently available for full fare customers only. Concession card holders should keep using their concession myki to ensure they are charged the correct fare.

If you are a concession card holder and accidentally tap on with a phone or bank card, wait 30 seconds and tap off with the same device so you are not charged. Any customers who make a mistake and are incorrectly charged should contact the Transport Victoria Contact Centre on 1800 800 007 to discuss reimbursement options.

Lead the Change is a Victorian Government‑funded program designed to help leaders and decision-makers in small to medium enterprises create respectful, inclusive environments across the hospitality, retail, manufacturing and construction industries.

The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) program provides practical tools, training and expert support to prevent gender‑based violence, meet legal obligations and build inclusive, positive workplace cultures. Sessions are free and delivered across metro, suburban and regional Victoria from February 2026 to May 2027.

The Scanlon Foundation (SCFO) Employment Pathways category will provide up to $50,000 per project/per annum for 2 years. WORLD | PWR | REFLECTING | Upon America’s Independence

In 1976, I was just a four-year-old kid in Delhi, glued to our family’s small black-and-white television. 

I remember being completely mesmerized by the grainy, flickering images of the American Bicentennial fireworks. Growing up in India, a country deeply shaped by our own monumental struggle for independence, freedom wasn't just an abstract concept – it was the very air we breathed. To my young eyes, those distant flashes of light on a static screen felt like a universal celebration of human liberty that connected us all.

Today, on July 4, 2026, as America marks its 250th anniversary, that childhood memory feels more meaningful than ever. Serving as the Chair of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, I see how beautifully our global stories intertwine. The freedom we celebrate today isn't isolated; it is a shared human journey.

We see this truth so clearly in the profound connection between Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Gandhi's philosophy of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha – soul force born from Indian spirituality – traveled across oceans to fuel Dr. King’s fight for civil rights in America. They showed the world that true freedom is inherently spiritual, and that our diverse faiths should move us to love and justice, never division.

The American experiment started 250 years ago with a bold commitment to religious liberty. Just like India’s rich spiritual landscape, it proved that a tapestry of different faiths can flourish together. On this Semiquincentennial, let's celebrate by recommitting to deep, mutual respect.

Welcome to the new financial year! There are several federal legislative changes taking effect from today, such as changes to the minimum wage to $26.44 per hour and the Government-funded paid parental leave increases to 26 weeks. 

Here in Victoria, the Victorian Small Business Commission launched the revised guidance on retail leasing and dispute resolution for small business today, making it easier for small business to start and to manage their businesses. The revised guideline includes 14 languages and is easily accessible for anyone using AI in language. Small businesses, as we all know, play a critical role in sponsoring community functions and events and their success underpin a society that is cohesive, connected and prosperous.

Despite the progress we continue to make, recent acts of hatred remind us that there is still work to do. My thoughts are with the Muslim community following the recent assault on a father outside a mosque in Hampton Park. Acts like these have no place in Victoria and remind us of our shared responsibility to foster respect, understanding and inclusion. I also welcome the timely launch last night of a national media awareness campaign, Report Islamophobia, by the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia. Initiatives like this help us better understand the experiences of Muslim Australians and strengthen a Victoria where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.

Today, the VMC’s Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) also conclude, as the new entity, Multicultural Victoria, takes shape following the Lekakis Review.  I would like to publicly express my appreciation for the contributions of all RAC members in my time as Chair, and all RAC members who have contributed since RACs began almost 15 years ago. Their insights also helped shape the 2025 Regional Advisory Forum Report, leaving a lasting legacy for multicultural Victoria. I encourage you to read my farewell message to RAC members, along with our media release marking this important milestone.

Together, these reflections continue to remind me that much of the work that strengthens our communities happens quietly. Every day, community leaders, faith leaders and volunteers generously give their time, wisdom and care, often without recognition or expectation of fanfare. It is impossible to comprehend a society without the work of these unsung heroes. 

That is why I encourage everyone to consider nominating an individual or organisation for the 2026 Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence. These awards shine a light on the people whose leadership, service and commitment make a genuine difference in our communities. By recognising their achievements, we inspire others to continue to contribute and participate, and make Victoria a place where everyone belongs. 
Thank you, as always, for your continued commitment to strengthening our communities and enriching our multicultural state.

Multicultural Victoria is shaped by the many voices, experiences and perspectives that contribute to the life of our state.

At the heart of that work is listening.

Over the past two months, the Victorian Multicultural Commission has held the final meetings of its Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) across the state. For almost 15 years, RAC members have been a vital link between communities and government, bringing local knowledge, lived experience and emerging issues into conversations that have informed policy, services and decision-making. 

As this chapter closes, we thank RAC members for their time, insight and service. 
Under the Victorian Government’s response to the Multicultural Review, community engagement will continue through Multicultural Victoria, ensuring communities remain central to the work ahead. 

That spirit of listening is especially important as communities across Victoria mark Refugee Week and World Refugee Day. This year’s theme, A Million Stories, reminds us that there is no singular refugee narrative but rather a constellation of individual lives, each shaped by its own journey, history and meaning.

I was pleased to attend Refugee Week events hosted by the Migrant Information Centre Eastern Melbourne and the Rotary Clubs of Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond, where the conversations reinforced the importance of listening to lived experience and acknowledging the ongoing contributions refugee communities make across Victoria. Later this week, I look forward to attending a gathering honouring Vietnamese refugee community and their enduring contribution to Victoria.

Storytelling is also at the heart of the Multicultural Film Festival. Tomorrow, I look forward to attending the premiere screening and delivering an address at one of the VMC’s flagship annual events. The festival celebrates storytelling, creativity and community voice, providing emerging filmmakers with a platform to share their work and perspectives with audiences across Victoria. I warmly encourage you to attend and join us in celebrating the power of film to help us better understand one another.

Today, we acknowledge Muslim communities marking the Islamic New Year, a time of reflection and remembrance. Later this week, Korean communities will celebrate Dano Festival, bringing people together through cultural heritage and community connection.

As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for all those who contribute their time, insight and care to our communities. Together, they help shape a stronger and more connected Victoria.

All Victorians are invited to share their views on community safety through the fifth annual Victoria Police (VICPOL) Community Sentiment Survey.

The survey gives community members an opportunity to tell Victoria Police about their local safety concerns, how they would like to interact with police and Protective Services Officers, and where police can focus efforts to prevent and deter crime. Feedback helps Victoria Police track community sentiment over time and strengthen local decision-making.

Community members are encouraged to complete the survey and share it through their networks.

100 Days of Peace is a national daily collective online meditation initiative by Calm In The City (CITC) running from 13 June until the UN International Day of Peace on 21 September 2026.

Each evening at 9pm AEST, community leaders from Australia and around the world will share a three-minute reflection on peace, followed by 10 minutes of collective silent meditation. The initiative is simple, free and open to all, with no registration required.

Community members are welcome to join online daily or whenever they can, contributing to a shared atmosphere of peace, reflection and care.

What does it mean to truly belong to a place, and to one another? It is a question that has shaped this fortnight in ways I want to share with you.

Wednesday 3 June marks both Mabo Day and the closing day of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2026. Mabo Day honours Eddie Mabo and those who fought alongside him for the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' connection to their land, a recognition that changed this country. This year's NRW theme, 'All In', carries that same spirit forward: a call to show up not occasionally, but with sustained and genuine commitment. Last Sunday I was honoured to attend the 2026 Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Service, a ceremony that held grief and resolve in equal measure. It reminded me of what it means to bear witness with care.

World Environment Day, 5 June, is a global call to protect and take responsibility for stewardship of our shared world. The health of our air, water and ecosystems is inseparable from the health of our communities. For many communities across multicultural Victoria, the relationship with the natural world is ancient and intimate, held in language, story and knowledge of how to read a landscape and live within it. 

Belonging, and the safety to belong, is also at the centre of the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion. The Royal Commission is actively seeking submissions, and I would encourage you all to provide evidence. The VMC is particularly encouraging submissions from students, Jewish students from non-Jewish schools, young people from all walks of life, senior Australians from all walks of life, and people living in health and aged care facilities. If you require assistance making a submission, for example if English is your second language, please reach out to contact@royalcommission.gov.au for support. Submissions close 14 June 2026.

Another initiative to contribute to is the Jewish Community Council of Victoria's Educate 10,000 initiative invites all Victorians to engage with Jewish culture, community and learning throughout 2026, through a visit to a synagogue or museum, or a conversation with a Jewish educator. It is a meaningful opportunity to build the kind of understanding that strengthens communities from within, and I encourage you to take part.

We also extend our warm wishes to Bahá'í communities who observed the Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh on 29 May, and to Christian communities who marked the Ascension of Christ on 14 May, sacred occasions whose significance we acknowledge with respect.

The premiere screening and awards ceremony will be held at ACMI Cinemas presented in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology and SBS.

VIC | VMC | CALLING | Nominees for Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence | nominations now open

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence (MAEs). Now in its 25th year, the MAEs are Australia’s longest‑standing multicultural awards. The MAEs recognise individuals and organisations making outstanding contributions to Victoria’s multicultural communities and intercultural and interfaith understanding.

The 2026 MAEs include 13 categories: Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll, Premier’s Award for Intercultural Connection, Arts and Culture, Business and Employment, Media, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Prevention of Family Violence, Public Sector Diversity and Inclusion, Police, Refugee Leadership, Refugee Youth Leadership, Sport and Recreation, and Youth Leadership.

You may nominate any individual or organisation you believe deserves recognition.  Prior to nominating, please read the nomination guide. Nominations are submitted through the nominations portal.

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria's Educate 10,000 initiative invites Victorians to engage with Jewish culture, community, and learning throughout 2026.

Groups and individuals can book visits to synagogues and museums or arrange conversations with Jewish educators. At a time of rising antisemitism, the initiative creates meaningful opportunities to learn, connect, and strengthen understanding across Victoria.

Educate 10,000 is an invitation to learn, to listen, and to better understand the lived experiences of Jewish Australians. Make a pledge today.

DOCKLANDS | IMCAFV | TRAINING | Family Violence Prevention and Response Training for Community and Faith Leaders | Monday 29 June 2026 | 10am-4pm

A free training session for multicultural sector workers, community leaders and faith-based leaders across Victoria by inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence (IMCAFV).

The training will build participants' understanding of family violence, help them recognise early warning signs, and strengthen their confidence to respond safely and appropriately to disclosures. The session will also explore healthy relationships, respectful communication and culturally responsive approaches to supporting community members and connecting them with relevant services.

VIC | GOV | CAMPAIGNING | STOPIT: Reporting unwanted sexual and anti-social behaviour on public transport

The Victorian Government's Stop It campaign is helping to create a safer and more respectful public transport network by encouraging people to report unwanted sexual behaviour and anti-social behaviour through Victoria Police's STOPIT reporting tool.

Now in its second phase, the campaign aims to increase awareness of what constitutes unwanted sexual behaviour and anti-social behaviour, while highlighting the importance of reporting incidents and the positive outcomes that reporting can support.

Multicultural campaign materials are available in Vietnamese, Arabic, Simplified Chinese and Italian. The campaign runs until 20 June 2026.

VIC | CDS | OFFERING | Win a Million! Cents Competition | closes Sunday 14 June 2026

The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) Vic Win a Million! Cents competition has returned, providing an opportunity for Victorians to participate in the CDS while supporting positive community outcomes.

By returning 50 or more eligible containers at a CDS Vic refund point, participants will go into the draw to win one of five $10,000 cash prizes (equivalent to one million cents). In addition, one winner will have the opportunity to direct a $10,000 donation to a registered CDS Vic donation partner, supporting community organisations and local groups across Victoria.
