VMC | UPDATING | Welcoming new premier and minister, learning your rights as a renter and more | Wednesday 4 October 2023

[Edited extract from public address]

The VMC would like to acknowledge the former Premier Dan Andrews for nine years of outstanding service and thank him for his obvious dedication to Victoria - in particular multicultural communities.

Premier Andrews was a consistent and strong leader, especially during the pandemic, and helped prevent many from contracting the coronavirus which we know disproportionally impacted the multicultural and multifaith communities.

I welcome Premier Jacinta Allan into the role. We are fortunate to have such an experienced leader for Victoria. Premier Allan will continue to serve our communities with passion and dedication.

The new cabinet was also announced on Monday 2 October and it has some exciting developments for the VMC. We welcome a new Minister for Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. Ingrid Stitt. It was also announced that the VMC will experience a machinery of government change, with the Multicultural Affairs portfolio moving to the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

While we welcome this renewed commitment to multicultural affairs, we will continue to ensure our policy and advocacy work for multicultural communities and multifaith communities is strengthened with an intersectional lens through strong continued links into the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing

My sincerest thanks to the Hon. Colin Brooks, his time as Minister for Multicultural Affairs was productive and collaborative and we wish him the best as he moves into his new portfolios of Creative Industries, Precincts and Development.

And finally, I thank all community, faith leaders and representatives who have attended the information sessions on the Voice to Parliament referendum.

It really demonstrated your commitment to participation and having an informed voice in matters of national interest.

Thank you all and keep reading for the latest news and events for multicultural communities.
Viv Nguyen, Chairperson
