VMC | UPDATING | Community, News and Information | Wednesday 10 July 2024

[Edited extract from public address]

I hope this message finds you well. As we enter this important time, I want to highlight a few key topics and initiatives that reflect our commitment to community, inclusion, and safety.

NAIDOC Week is a special time for all Australians to recognise and celebrate the rich culture and achievements of First Nations People. This year's theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud," honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture. This NAIDOC Week Commissioners Mohammed Mohideen and Sylvia Coombe were featured in a video where they encouraged everyone to get involved in celebrating First Nations People and recognising their culture and achievements.

The Victorian Minister for Industry and Employment has announced the key findings from the Map for Impact - Victorian Social Enterprise Mapping Project. The report reveals that Victoria’s social enterprises contribute at least $5.2 billion to the economy and generate around 60,000 jobs, including 12,000 specifically for people with disabilities. This highlights the sector's importance in creating jobs and fostering an inclusive economy. The VMC remains committed to supporting these enterprises as they continue to make significant social and economic impacts across Victoria

In Ballarat, we are embarking on a world-leading family violence prevention project. This four-year "saturation model" will integrate new and expanded programs, policies, and services across the community. By learning from various community touchpoints and implementing innovative approaches, including online initiatives, this project aims to create a comprehensive and effective prevention strategy. Additionally, it will strengthen referral pathways, ensuring early support for those experiencing violence or exhibiting initial warning signs.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to fostering a safer, more inclusive community for all.

Warm regards,
Viv Nguyen, Chairperson
