MESAC | PRESENTING | Beaumaris Fossil Expo | Sunday 6 August 2023 | 10am–2.30pm

[Edited extract from public address]

This annual Fossil Expo features amazing fossils from the nearby Beaumaris foreshore, and for the first time we are privileged to present collections from Fossil Beach on the Mornington Peninsula and the Victorian Surf Coast.

Rare opportunity to learn from the experts - Highlights include:
  • Private collections of national significance
  • The display includes Australia’s only model of Pelagornis (a toothed bird with a wingspan of nearly 6 metres). This prehistoric bird is known to have inhabited Beaumaris about 5.5 million years ago!
  • A collection of Fossil Turtle fragments, never before seen in public. There are less than a dozen fragments of turtle known to exist from Australia, representing the last 60 million years of Australian prehistory. Several will be donated to Museum Victoria at the end of this exhibition.
  • “Rosie” the partial backbone of a 6 metre juvenile whale.
Presented by BESS (Bayside Earth Science Society Inc.) and MESAC
  • Where: Beaumaris Secondary College Auditorium, 117-135 Reserve Road Beaumaris, (near the corner of Balcombe Road)
  • Cost: $5 per head or $8 Family Ticket
  • Full Program

[Edited extract from public address]

Join this return of MESAC's annual winter solstice walk beachside, from McGregors Rock, (top end of the sanctuary opposite McGregor Ave, on Beach Rd, Beaumaris), to the Ricketts Point Tea House car park.

The walk is about a kilometre long and lasts about an hour. At this time of the year a wind jacket and footwear suitable for the sand and some reef time, is recommended.

Subjects discussed along the way will, as usual, include our local geography and erosion, (Prof John Buckeridge), some Aboriginal history, (Ray Lewis) and our local fossil heritage (Murray Orr).

Where: Meet on the footpath, top of the steps down to the beach. Parking in McGregor’s Rd near the start of the walk, and Haydens Rd at the end, (near the Tea House), is free. Parking in the public car parks north and south of the Tea House is about $5 an hour for non-Bayside residents.
Considerations: Communicating beachside with wind and wave noise and more, can be difficult at times. Event proceeds despite any adverse weather or tidal conditions
Cost: Free
