VMC | FINAL CALLING | For entries to the Multicultural Film Festival! | submissions closing 20 June 2021 | 11.59pm

[Edited extract from public address]

The Multicultural Film Festival showcases short films that explore stories of diversity and inclusion.

The VMC's Multicultural Film Festival submission period is closing soon! You or your networks have until 20 June to submit your short film to be in contention for some brilliant prizes.

Shortlisted films will be screened at a gala awards presentation at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Federation Square in August.

We are seeking creative, original, non-formulaic short films about cultural diversity and multiculturalism. The stories the films tell can be made by and/or be about people from any cultural background.

Prizes include:
  • Tips and ideas industry session from SBS Head of Unscripted, John Godfrey
  • Industry session with SBS Content Industry Diversity Manager, Michelle Cheng
  • An internship with Mushroom Creative House, a creative agency and production house that has unparalleled access to the music & entertainment worlds

Film has a unique capacity to connect audiences to other points of view. Though we may have different backgrounds, when we immerse ourselves in stories of cultural heritage and identity, it’s easy to see that there is more that unites us than divides us.

We support emerging filmmakers from diverse backgrounds and also invite submissions from filmmakers of any background to produce films that explore multiculturalism and promote social cohesion.

Each year, our shortlisted films feature characters who are encountering new ways of life, struggling with feeling isolated in a new country or within their cultures' traditions, or beginning to embrace and celebrate their difference.

Ranging from gentle childhood fables to more stridently political works, all are strong examples of the power of storytelling in creating dialogue and initiating understanding.

There will be four categories in the Main Festival:
  • Short Fiction Film
  • Short Non Fiction Film
  • Open Category Film
  • Emerging Film Maker

Many thanks to our partners Swinburne University, SBS & Mushroom Creative House.

Please share this far and wide!
