ECCV | GATHERING | Why Yes? Why now? Multicultural Communities and the Voice' forum | Monday 25 September 2023 | 6–8:30pm

[Edited extract from public address]

With less than six weeks until Australia goes to the polls, now is the time to have important conversations and ask questions about the upcoming referendum.

Our forum will feature a panel discussion with First Nations and multicultural leaders about how the Voice will lead to meaningful, practical change and how migrant and refugee communities can play a vital role in the achieving this historic step forward for all Australians.

There will be ample time set aside for an audience Q&A. The forum is an opportunity for members of our diverse communities to hear from and speak directly with First Nations leaders about what a Voice to Parliament means and why it matters.

Taking part in the panel will be special guests:
  • Azmeena Hussain OAM, Chairperson, Islamic Museum of Australia
    Principal Lawyer, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers
  • Aunty Esme Bamblett, CEO, Aboriginal Advancement League
Member of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria
  • Professor Mark Rose, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Indigenous Strategy and Innovation at Deakin University
  • Sheena Watt MP, Member for Northern Metropolitan
  • Dr Shireen Morris, Senior Lecturer, Macquarie Law School
    Director, Radical Centre Reform Lab
Moderating the panel will be Maria Dimopoulos AM, Director of Myriad Kofkin Global and Adjunct Senior Fellow at the National Centre for Reconciliation, Truth and Justice.

As the peak body for migrant and refugee communities in Victoria, ECCV is proud to take a leading role in raising awareness about the referendum and empowering migrant and refugee communities to walk together on the path to genuine reconciliation.

Thank you to Maurice Blackburn Lawyers for their generous support.
