GEIFN | AWAKENING | Peace in Modern Times – Commemorating UN International Day of Peace | 21 September 2026

[Edited extract from public address]

1. UN | COMMEMORATING | International Day of Peace | 21 September

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

Annually, on 21 September, the world marks the International Day of Peace.

Today, amidst staggering volatility, the search for peace feels overwhelming—but it has never been more urgent.

Peace is more than the absence of war; it is the foundation necessary to collectively tackle humanity’s challenges. It is the lived experience of safety, dignity, opportunities and cooperation in our daily lives.

Under the theme Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day, this year’s International Day of Peace honours the 'everyday architects of peace'—people driving local action, laying the groundwork for stability, and building a lasting peace from the ground up.

"Peace is not just made at conference tables, but in classrooms, neighbourhoods, and everywhere people meet with open minds and open hearts. Together, day by day, we can build a more just world, with compassion, equality and dignity for all." – UN Secretary-General António Guterre

Everyone, everywhere can do their part for peace. Take one small step for peace every day.

Remember, peace isn’t just built in conference rooms—it is shaped by everyone, everywhere, every day.

  • Give your time to help someone else.
  • Lend your voice to drive positive change.
  • Host a Peace Circle - an intergeneration youth-led conversation on solutions.
  • Use your platform to promote a cause or tell a story of peace and hope

 2. UNHCR | UPDATING | Forcibly Displaced, Refugees & Stateless | Figures at a Glance | 31 December 2025

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, other forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.
"2025 was an extraordinarily difficult year for international protection, exposing the widening gap between global commitments and collective action. Funding cuts were not abstract: they meant less access to education, health care, protection and support at a time when needs were greatest. Despite a reduced workforce and operational footprint, UNHCR prioritized life-saving assistance and continued to deliver protection and support in some of the world's most challenging environments.” – Barham Salih, UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Summary

The Global Report highlights funding, expenditure and impact in 2025 as UNHCR responded to the needs of a record number of forcibly displaced and stateless people around the world.

Caretaker Disclosure

Words and concepts are conditional things that point to a 'reflection of experience'. They are limited and do not adequately describe the 'full lived experience'. Like the moon's reflection on a lake's surface, it is not the moon, nor the experience of gazing up at the darkened sky transformed by the presence of a full moon. It is in the eyes/ears/nose/mouth/touch/cognisance of the beholder.

This curation is an interpretation of the universal basis of re:lig:ion (Latin = again:uniting:energy) or bodhicitta (Sanskrit = Awakening Consciousness). This email invites a sharing of countless thoughts, words and actions wishing, causing and receiving less Suffering and more Happiness. For benefit initially of the individual increasing in beneficiaries until it includes all across the 3 times and 10 directions. Or not. As each case may be.

It is not personal, it just the way things are.

 5. Dedicating Merit and Best Wishes for Less Suffering

In Buddhism, the starting point is that all living things feel, and it is this capacity that perceives pleasure, pain and indifference. Not knowing which is which, the ignorant recreate, create and hold onto the illusory in an unbroken loop of Dukkha/Samsara/dissatisfactoriness or suffering (Pali/Sanskrit/English).

In Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, Bhaisajyaguru/Medicine Buddha (Sanskrit/English) is known for healing and medicine – relieving the living who are suffering.

Formally or fully known as Bhaiṣajya-guru-vaiḍūrya-prabhā-rāja/Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light (Sanskrit/English).

Mantras are recited to overcome mental, physical and spiritual sickness.

Teyata Om Bekandze Bekandze Maha Bekandze Radza Samugate Soha is the mantra of Medicine Buddha and simply means "May the many sentient beings who are sick, quickly be freed from sickness. And may all beings have the causes of happiness.

 May all beings have happiness,
May all beings be free from suffering,
May all beings feel an ocean of happiness and joy
And may we live with the good heart
 Feeling close to all.
