CoPP | PPLS | TALKING | With Footballer Peter Bradford and 150 Years of South Melbourne Football Club | Tuesday 23 July 2024 | 6.30-7.30pm

[Edited extract from public address]

Join Peter Bedford, winner of the 1970 Brownlow Medal and member of South Melbourne’s Team of the Century, to speak about club history and his captaincy 1973-76.

South Melbourne Football Club was officially inaugurated in June 1874, being on one of the most successful teams in the early years of Australian Rules in Victoria.

Fortunes changed for South Melbourne after the second world war. They struggled as a team and barely made the finals for many decades. Playing their last game at Lakeside Oval in 1981, the team relocated to Sydney the following year.

The Sydney Swans have won two premierships, in 2005 and 2012, and still boast a large number of loyal old South Melbourne fans among their supporters.

Hear from football royalty in this intimate and unmissable event. Bookings essential.

CoPP | ENCOURAGING | All to Join Team Respect in #callitout | 24 November 2022

[Edited extract from public address]

Ending violence against women, girls and gender diverse people starts with equality.

Help us create equality on and off the field for 16 Days of Activism.

This year, with the support of Respect Victoria and their Sexism in Sport #callitout campaign, we are celebrating the 16 Days of Activism by chatting to some of our local sporting clubs about how they encourage and promote gender equality on and off the field.

One in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, and one in five Australian women have experienced sexual violence. As part of creating an inclusive Port Phillip, we are working hard to address the stereotypes, disrespect and inequality that allow this violence to continue and are committed to advancing gender equality for the benefit of our whole community.

Sport has a vital role to play in promoting equality and preventing violence against women at both an individual level and more broadly as influential organisations and workplaces. With a sizeable percentage of the Port Phillip community participating in some form of sport or physical activity, the attitudes and behaviours learned and displayed in sport can have a considerable influence on how our community behaves and has a significant impact on preventing gender-based violence before it occurs.

This week we are lucky to be hearing from some young local athletes and their clubs about how they create an equal playing field for girls, women and gender diverse people in our community. As Megan from Middle Park Football Club tells us, “It's about creating a culture and an environment where people feel safe and calling out the behaviour that is not okay.”

Every person at every level of our sporting clubs; including management, coaches, umpires, volunteers, players, and fans; has a part to play in promoting equality and preventing violence against women. To help create an even playing field for all genders, we have collated a range of tools and resources that are available to support our sporting clubs to #callitout:

ECCV's Raise Our Voices program

This program aims to empower people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse communities by developing their self-advocacy skills and improving understanding of the disability services system and support pathways.
On 5 July 2021, ECCV conducted the first self-advocacy workshop in Morwell, with the new Raise Our Voices - Gippsland peer-led support group, supported by Gippsland Multicultural Services. The group will run two further sessions in the workshop series, focusing on how to advocate and become confident in speaking up for themselves, supportive decision making, self-management of NDIS plans and personal development skills.

NDIS independent assessments scrapped

ECCV welcomes the announcement this month by the Minister for the NDIS, Linda Reynolds, that the planned independent assessments for NDIS will not proceed, after state and territory ministers rejected the proposal. The controversial independent assessments plan prompted widespread backlash from advocates in the disability sector, with the Federal government receiving more than 5000 emails, submissions and calls opposing the scheme.

NDIS Proposed Personalised Budgets

The NDIS has released information papers on the proposed personalised budgets model, using information from participant’s independent assessment to help make personalised budgets. There are planned changes to how NDIS funding is calculated. If introduced, participant's personalised budgets would be divided into ‘flexible’ and ‘fixed’ to increase the flexibility with which participants could use their funding to pursue their goals. New participant journey maps explaining the proposed planning process for participants can be found on the NDIS website.

2021 Federal Budget

The 2021-22 Federal Budget has included increased funding of $13.2 billion over the next four years for the NDIS, estimating that the NDIS will cost almost $32 billion in 2024-25, making it comparable to the cost of Medicare. Consultations are continuing on the proposed independent assessments in response to widespread opposition by disability advocates. The assessments proposal has been linked to the sustainability of the scheme. Minister for the NDIS, Linda Reynolds has confirmed she intends to introduce a bill to legislate the assessments in some form this year.

Disability Employment Services report

A mid-term review of the Disability Employment Services (DES) has found that the program is not better at helping people with disability find paid work.

Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) is calling on the government to scrap punishing mutual obligation requirements and to ensure that employment services are designed more effectively. Dr. Cassandra Goldie, ACOSS CEO, said: “We have known that employer discrimination against people with disabilities is a main reason why they are overlooked for jobs, and this is where change is needed at a broader societal level.”
