WORLD | CUIN | UPDATING | Diversity Atlas - Will AI Empower or Erase Humanity? Join the Debate | 12-13 March 2025

[Edited extract from public address]

AI is reshaping our world—but at what cost? Explore its promises, risks, and the future of humanity at BDAIW, London

TALKING | AI – Terminator or Liberator? Humanity's Role in Our Future

As artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes industries, creativity, and daily life, we face a question: will AI empower humanity or pose existential threats to the foundations of humanity? How will it liberate or terminate elements of our 200k year  evolving cultural diversity, our identity, our survival of what it means to be human today?

AI Large Language Models, for example, developed from a huge variety of sources, are a powerful expression of confluence, which is the lifeblood of culture. The big LLMs, like ChatGPT, are supposedly developed to serve humanity as a whole. However, the main developers of this technology come from a narrowly unrepresentative range of human backgrounds. And now DeepSeek’s disruption on capabilities, development cost and open source will no doubt set new boundaries of where it can go, unabated.

Beyond dystopian fears and utopian dreams, is there a way to envision a future where AI and humanity coexist through responsible innovation? How will it shape humanity? What impacts are we likely to see, how should we prepare of unparalleled uncertainty at an ever increasing pace?

At Big Data & AI World London, thought leader and CEO / Founder Peter Mousaferiadis will moderate a compelling panel exploring AI’s promises and perils. Experts in technology, ethics, and the humanities will discuss AI’s role as both an innovation engine and a societal disruptor. What safeguards are needed to help ensure AI serves the whole of humanity? And how will our values and cultures shape AI’s trajectory? And how will AI’s shape ours?

Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in the debate that will define our era. Join us and be part of the conversation shaping our collective future.

Peter Mousaferiadis  questions the diversity of leadership at the ABC, linking the issue to Australian leadership more broadly.

Exploring how President Donald Trump evokes meritocracy, this piece questions how we can achieve when we don't have a level playing field.

CHAMPIONING | Responsible AI at AI 2030

WORLD | CUIN | UPDATING | Diversity Atlas - DEI Global Survey Results and more | November 2024

[Edited extract from public address]

Discover key insights from our global DEI survey!

Recently, Diversity Atlas conducted a global survey of Diversity, Equity And Inclusion (DEI) professionals (628 participants) and the results were fascinating.

Once we have completed our analysis we’ll be holding a webinar to discuss the results, probably in February 2025, and newsletter subscribers will also receive the full report in advance of the webinar.

In the meantime, we can reveal the headlines. There were certain themes that emerged,  that affect everyone in the DEI space globally:
  1. The backlash is real; not as big as reported, but focused enough to have an impact on us all
  2. There is much confusion and disagreement as to what the aim of 'DEI' even is
  3. DEI teams are under-resourced and often suffering from burnout
  4. 'Staff' are generally supportive of DEI, leaders are not
  5. DEI teams lack the data to make the business case to leadership.
These will be the topics for discussion on the report (and the webinar), and we hope you can join.

In the meantime, if you’d like to have a chat about the global state of the DEI profession, or would like a demo of the Diversity Atlas data gathering platform (which can at least help with point number ‘5’ above!), please email me back and we can set up a time. I’d love to hear from you!

Cheers,
Quincy Hall, Product Director

CELBRATING | She Got Game

Is there anyone left in the world who hasn’t heard of Raygun today? Her performance at the Olympics has propelled breakdancing into the global spotlight like never before. Everyone's talking about it! On that note, we’re excited to share that Cultural Infusion has staged hip hop events, workshops and festivals throughout Australia since 2009, including the renowned National Freestyle Competition, drawing international artists and judges. ‘She Got Game’ was tailored especially for girls. Beyond just entertainment, these events have served as a platform to celebrate the diversity and creativity inherent in hip hop culture, while actively working to dismantle the stereotypes and stigma often associated with it.

Cultural Infusion remains passionately engaged in delivering hip hop programs to schools across the country. These programs educate students about the rich history and global influence of hip hop and empower them by promoting self-expression, confidence, and cultural understanding.

We invite you to watch these videos showcasing our work, including the National Freestyle Events at Federation Square, which featured a range of workshops in MCing, krumping, locking, breakdancing, and beatboxing with participants ranging in age from 2 to 80. These gatherings were a vibrant space for people of all backgrounds to come together, learn, and share their love for hip hop.

REPORTING | Australia’s 2024 Multicultural Framework Review

As one of the world’s most culturally diverse nations, Australia has more to gain or lose from its diversity than most. At best, we are a multicultural society where innovation thrives and mutual curiosity and respect is the norm. At worst, we are fearful, insular, judgmental of each other and torn by internal conflict. The stakes could not be much higher.

Australia’s 2024 Multicultural Framework Review (MFR) was initiated in recognition of the importance of managing diversity.  On 2 June 2023 Andrew Giles, the minister leading the review, delivered a brilliant and honest launch speech, saying ‘Well-managed diversity leads to social cohesion.’

On 24 July 2024, the Australian government released the 202-page MFR, ‘Towards Fairness – a multicultural Australia for all’ as a ‘generational reform agenda’ ‘that will position Australia to realise its full potential as a nation made up of many cultures, faiths and lived experiences.’ Does the MFR really position Australia to realise its full potential?

Keep your eyes open for a response to this question from our Founder and CEO Peter Mousaferiadis.

SPOTLIGHTING | Calendar Highlight — International Day of Friendship | 30 July

The International Day of Friendship is celebrated on 30 July every year.

The World Friendship Crusade lobbied the United Nations for several years to recognise 30 July as World Friendship Day.  This day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2011 to promote the role that friendship plays across all cultures. The UN encourages community groups, organisations, and governments to hold events that promote reconciliation, mutual understanding, and solidarity.

The UN has invited all member states to observe the International Day of Friendship per the culture and customs of their local, national, and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities. This day is a great opportunity to celebrate the cultural aspects of friendship and to promote understanding and solidarity among people of different cultures.

REPORTING | Tech Diversity

Our CEO and Founder Peter Mousaferiadis recently delivered a popular talk at Big Data & AI World London that touched on the lack of diversity among the dominant tech developers and the limited datasets they rely on, magnifying biases that perpetuate inequities and disharmony.

Tech Diversity is a social enterprise devoted to the vital work of growing a diverse, inclusive and equitable technology workforce across all industry sectors.

Last month our diversity data platform Diversity Atlas mapped the collective culture of participants at the TechDiversity Awards for the third year running, with our Education and Experiences Leader Nicola Diomides and Diversity Atlas Cultural Attaché Quincy Hall delivering the results.

Note that Bengali and Gujurati were both in the top 10 languages spoken at advanced proficiency in the room. Few if any other available diversity data tools would reveal this information or identify that 3.8% of the room hold a self-defined spiritual worldview.

Diversity Atlas was recently cited in an article for top American political publication The Hill by leading race theorist Dr Sheena Mason as a tool that can help ‘create a future without as much of the injustice, inequity, sameness and exclusion that we all maintain, even if unintentionally.’

Do you want to know how Diversity Atlas would enhance cohesion and intercultural competence in your school or organisation?

REPORTING | Unfinished Business

Sorry Day is an annual Australian commemoration on 26 May to mark the anniversary of the 1997 tabling of the Bringing Them Home report, which contained revelations that shocked most Australians and included 54 recommendations, many still unmet. This year’s theme was ‘Bringing Them Home – the unfinished business’.

Our Founder and CEO Peter Mousaferiadis has worked with members of the Stolen Generations since the 1990s. In June 2024, Peter and esteemed colleagues Uncle Paul and Aunty Gabby facilitated the first of a series of workshops with Western Health, in Melton on the western outskirts of Melbourne, exploring identity with members of the Stolen Generations.

Here are some of Peter’s reflections from the day:
‘It was a day of deep listening, learning, healing and fun … Multiculturalism is viewed by many Aboriginal people as something that has overshadowed the existing cultures of the land, potentially diminishing the prominence of Aboriginal culture. Aboriginal culture, with its rich history spanning more than 60,000 years, is for everyone to understand and appreciate. It emphasises the importance of looking after the land that has provided such a beautiful place for all of us.’

Professional Development

Aunty Gabby and Aunty Dawn facilitated a professional development session for teachers at Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School, winning us this endorsement:
‘The presenters were amazing! The session was highly educational and relevant to our school RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) program. Our vision recognizes that we work on stolen land and strive to reconcile this reality; we were not here first, and sovereignty was never ceded. It is crucial to remember this as a fundamental motivation for our vision. This was well explained and presented.’

Do you know we also offer corporate programs?

Aunty Gabby recently completed a magnificent framed artwork with and for Incitec Pivot Limited in Melbourne.

HIGHLIGHTING | Calendar Spotlight: Nelson Mandela Day | 18 July

‘It is not our diversity which divides us; it is not our ethnicity, or religion or culture that divides us. Since we have achieved our freedom, there can only be one division amongst us: between those who cherish democracy and those who do not.’ – Nelson Mandela
While July in Australia is indisputably NAIDOC Week, our calendar spotlight is on Nelson Mandela Day, a day that commemorates his birthday and inspires cultural celebrations around the world.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918–2013) was an anti-apartheid revolutionary and eventually South Africa’s first democratically elected president, serving between 1994 and 1999, admired worldwide for his commitment to peace and reconciliation.

From 1964 to 1990, Nelson Mandela was famously incarcerated after standing trial for plotting to overthrow the apartheid government. His imprisonment and the apartheid system he opposed inspired global protests and popular songs that became rallying cries. In 1993, Nelson Mandela was awared the Nobel Peace Prize.

Check your local area for details on how to participate in Nelson Mandela Day celebrations.

CUIN | UPDATING | Empowering Tech Through Diversity | May 2024

[Edited extract from public address]

Diversity Atlas is proud to be a part of the TechDiversity Awards Gala Dinner for the third consecutive year, celebrating innovative strides in diversity and inclusion within the tech industry.

Additionally, we are honored to be part of the groundbreaking TechReflects Study, the world's first initiative aimed at enhancing the Australian tech workforce and community. As we continue our commitment to fostering inclusive workplaces, we invite you to join the Inclusive Employer survey run by the Diversity Council of Australia, an essential step towards creating a more equitable and diverse professional environment. Read on for more details!

REPORTING | Four Super Amazing Things at the TechDiversity Awards 2024

On 23 May 2024, Diversity Atlas hit the stage at the TechDiversity Awards Gala Dinner for the third year in a row. Hosted at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, the event drew 460 people from across the tech sector. We had a blast mapping and measuring the audience, adding an extra dash of theatre and excitement to the night.

Here are some of the insights we discovered:
  • Sexuality as Identity: 18.3% of attendees identified as non-heterosexual, with 'bisexual' being the most common. For these individuals, 'sexuality' ranked as the most important aspect of their identity, highlighting the need for workplaces to acknowledge and support diverse sexual orientations.
  • Neurodiversity Representation: 10% of the room identified as neurodivergent, a significant figure for the tech industry. This emphasises the importance of understanding and supporting neurodivergent employees, as their presence and contributions are invaluable.
  • Cultural Diversity: From just 298 participants, we identified 90 different ancestral cultures spanning 40 countries of birth.
  • TechDiversity’s Impact: The TechDiversity organisation, led by Luli Adeyemo and supported by passionate colleagues like Soozey Johnstone, Stacey Hutchinson, and Jen Murray, continues to foster growth and innovation through DEI initiatives. Their efforts are crucial in shaping a more inclusive tech industry in Australia.
Congratulations to all the winners and nominees, and a big thank you to TechDiversity for the opportunity to showcase our work. We look forward to next year's event!

CALLING | Inclusive Employers in Australia – Come Along!

For the fourth year running, the Diversity Council of Australia (DCA) have partnered with Diversity Atlas to deploy their Inclusive Employer survey platform.

The survey itself takes a deep dive into any Australian organisation’s inclusion sentiment across 40+ questions, as well as collecting diversity and demographic data along the way for intersectional analysis – all anonymous of course, as it uses Diversity Atlas’s platform to gather the data.

The benchmarking we provide allows organisations to compare and contrast their data to the Australian workforce, other participant organisations and also by ‘industry’.  DCA also offer certification as ‘Inclusive Employers’ to those companies who meet the criteria.
"Working with the team at Diversity Atlas for our Inclusive Employer Index is a wonderful experience. Partnering with another organisation that is also passionate about the importance of data to drive positive change in organisations helps us provide a product DCA is very proud of." – Dr. Rose D’Almada-Remedios from the Diversity Council of Australia.
The survey is predominantly used by members of DCA, but non-members can also participate. If you’re an Aussie company with a commitment to DEI or even just beginning your journey into DEI analysis and initiatives, you should definitely have a look at what the survey can offer, and also consider DCA membership.

Companies like DCA and Diversity Atlas are right at the coalface of DEI data gathering and analysis.  Over the years, both of our organisations, in our own style and dogged way, and even with differing emphasis, have become the custodians of Australian high resolution diversity data, particularly diversity data that can be intersected against sentiment.  We’re data nerds so we insist that to launch any kind of DEI program it makes sense to have the data first, and the Inclusive Employer Index is just perfect for this.

The survey will from run 1 July-30 September 2024.

LAUNCHING | World-first study set to enhance Australian tech workforces and community!

On 21 May 2024 our CXO, Michael Walmsley joined Luli Adeyemo, Executive Director of TechDiversity, and Miranda Ratajski, Chief Information Officer at Westpac, for a comprehensive discussion on the transformative TechReflects study, launched in mid-March 2024.

TechReflects represents a groundbreaking intersection of DEI and Big Data—a global first, benchmarking workforce diversity and cultural insights against the broader Australian community. It’s an initiative ensuring that everyone has the chance to contribute to and thrive within the technology sector.

This world-first research seeks not just to measure and identify gaps; it’s about uncovering the rich, untapped skill sets within our society that can propel a collaborative mission of achieving 1.2 million tech jobs by 2030.

During the webinar, Miranda unveiled how the Tech Reflects study will provide insights into Australia’s technology workforce and enhance the wider community through insightful, data-driven engagement.

Michael Walmsley explained that this year alone, AUD148 billion dollars will be spent on marketing operations globally, in an effort to better understand client bases and serve their needs, whilst the technology sector neglects to identify its own workforce.
“It is difficult to exercise inclusion, if we don’t know who we are, to start with”
As Michael said, underscoring the importance of understanding how the report can be leveraged to gauge current DEI status, and develop strategies for a more inclusive and attractive workplace.

Don’t miss learning about the rich benefits and valuable takeaways from participating in this transformative study.

REPORTING | Excluding Anybody Is Bad for Everybody

There are big reasons to centre cultural diversity and ensure inclusion in all our social decisions.

Our CEO and Founder Peter Mousaferiadis has often spoken and written about the cost of culture-based violent conflict, which is rising steeply. In dollar terms, this came to about $US13.1 trillion dollars in 2022.

Social exclusion has a huge ethical and political cost. It also has a measurable dollar cost – even huger than the cost of conflict! This is due to the loss of innovation, productivity and missed business opportunities plus increased numbers of people experiencing poverty. Even just feeling excluded causes people to opt out of markets, services and spaces.

Looking at the (estimated) figures representing the global cost of gender, disability and ethnic & racialised inequity, they total *US$24.65 trillion* a year – about 26% of global GDP! This doesn’t even factor in many other forms of discrimination based on religion, sexuality, age, caste, class, appearance and more. For sources on these estimated figures, read the post in the link below.

PARTICIPATING | May Events and Appearances

1–3 May Peter Mousaferiadis participated in two days of discussions at the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue in Baku, Azerbaijan. He says the discussions offered: ‘insights rarely heard in the West. One stark reminder from this region was Australia's less-than-stellar reputation concerning its handling of asylum seekers and irregular migrants.’

16 May CTO Rezza Moieni participated in the Vietnam ESG Investor Conference 2024.

18 May Marketing & Comms Coordinator Marios Chatzidamianos participated in Live a Legacy Mentoring Day in Athens, Greece.

21 May CXO Michael Walmsley joined Digital Innovation Futures Victoria in Melbourne for an in-depth exploration of the groundbreaking Tech Reflects study.

CELEBRATING | Rich cultural diversity at WORKTECH Melbourne 2024

The Diversity Atlas team presented at the conference in Melbourne in March. The event was well attended, with presenters and participants from all over the world. The focus was exploring the latest developments and emerging trends for all those involved in the future of work and the workplace across the places people work, in the real estate, technology and innovation rapidly taking place. The event highlighted some innovations in the workforce, transforming the traditional office space for today's organisation.

New workplaces were showcased that adapt to changing environments, utilising space to accommodate hybrid settings and maximise space efficiency tuned to workflows and peoples needs. Presentations from Xero, Bookings.com, Gallup, Unwork, Bristol Myers Squibb, ANZ and many others shared these changes and demonstrated how they are adapting to keep teams together remotely, using AI to map and forecast changes in layout and demand for meetings rooms and other workspaces to really understand what people are doing at work. An emphasis on how to make the office experience enjoyable and engaging with consideration to not only how much time spent in the office, but why the workers come and what impact they can have.

Diversity Atlas gave a fun celebratory presentation that showed some of the rich diversity from participants. An exceptional rate of 70% of attendees completed the WORKTECH Diversity Atlas survey with results shown in the afternoon by Michael Walmsley, who also touched on the growing importance to understand the rich diversity of teams that occupy these changing work environments. A report was then sent to delegates after the event.

REPORTING | Impact on diversity on startup success

Our CEO & Founder Peter Mousaferiadis was hosted by Iryna Manukovska during her podcast in which they spoke about diversity's effects on business, innovations and startup process.

Incorporating inclusion and diversity isn't just about addressing social issues; it's about fostering growth. When individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives collaborate, they bring a broader spectrum of ideas and experiences. Therefore, diversity is crucially important in the tech industry, and its influence on business is wide reaching.

HEARING | Your say: Tech Reflects Study

We invite tech leaders to participate in a groundbreaking national effort that intersects Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Big Data. This initiative benchmarks workforce diversity against the broader Australian community, fostering a more inclusive tech sector where everyone can thrive.

If you're an Australian organisation with a technology workforce, we invite you to be a part of this collaborative mission of achieving 1.2million tech jobs by 2030.

Our CEO and Founder, Peter Mousaferiadis, and our Cultural Ambassador in the EU, Mario Chatzidamianos, co-authored an article on the importance of developing inclusive data sets to serve the UN’s Resolution on “The right to development” and the SDGs, published in the latest issue of Allilon magazine, produced by Allilon NGO in Greece.

GATHERING | Mastercard’s Global Inclusive Growth Summit 2024

The annual Global Inclusive Growth Summit, hosted by the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, brings together entrepreneurs, innovators, policymakers, and changemakers to collaborate and address today's most pressing challenges. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the EU-based Cultural Ambassador Mario Chatzidamianos shared key insights on inclusive economic development.

During the summit, leaders from various sectors convened to discuss tangible solutions for empowering individuals to harness the digital economy's benefits. Key focuses included public-private partnerships, speeding and scaling impact, reforming financial systems, expanding access to information and technology, and addressing artificial intelligence's potential as both a tool for advancing inclusive growth and a source of exclusion.

The summit emphasized the importance of technology and connectivity in promoting inclusive growth while acknowledging the need to bridge the gap for the 2.5 billion people who still lack access to tech tools. Ultimately, the event stressed the significance of understanding and empowering oneself to become agents of change in their communities, highlighting Diversity Atlas's role in supporting marginalized populations and individuals in need of empowerment.

HIGHLIGHTING | Calendar Spotight — International Star Wars Day

This informal commemorative day, observed on 4 May each year, transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, uniting enthusiasts in their shared love for the epic saga set in a galaxy far, far away.
