As we reflect on recent events and look forward to upcoming opportunities, I want to share some important updates and heartfelt messages.
Reflecting on this year’s Refugee Week theme "Finding Freedom: Family," I acknowledge that deep emotions can be evoked for refugees, regardless of when they took those perilous journeys. During the week, I attended Australian Chaldean Community International Refugee Week event and witnessed both the lingering trauma and the remarkable strength within our community. People came together to celebrate the daily contributions of refugees and to honour those who never made it, with lit candles and heartfelt prayers for souls still seeking freedom and home. Like many refugees who have found safety, I add my prayer for hope—a hope for a better tomorrow for all, here and around the world. The VMC will always advocate for refugee rights and support their journey towards finding freedom and belonging.
It is with a mix of sadness and sincere gratitude that we announce the departure of Hakan Akyol from the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) and the Victorian Public Service (VPS). Hakan's dedication to multicultural affairs in Victoria spans over two decades, impacting numerous departments and serving under various Premiers, Ministers, and VMC Chairs. His invaluable contributions include guiding the introduction of the Multicultural Victoria Act in 2004 and much more. Hakan's "glass half full" approach, and unwavering passion for fostering a diverse and inclusive society have inspired many. While we will miss his presence, we understand his desire for a well-deserved break and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
Lastly, as the school holidays approach, there's an exciting array of activities planned across Victoria. Local councils have organised a variety of events that cater to all age groups, providing fun and engaging experiences for families and children. I encourage everyone to check their local council websites to find more information about the free activities available in your area. During this time, let’s prioritise both fun and safety. Enjoy the holidays and make wonderful memories, while also ensuring that you and your loved ones stay safe and look out for one another.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and cohesive community.
Warm regards,
Viv Nguyen. Chairperson
