GOVV | CALL FOR RESPONSE | Victoria's first Family Violence Workforce Census | CLOSES Friday 5 May 2017

[Edited extract from public address]

A Victorian Government census of all workforces that intersect with family violence.

The census has been launched 10 April and will provide an evidence base for the development of the state government’s 10-Year Family Violence Industry Plan.  The Industry Plan will provide a systematic approach to workforce planning and development, and will address issues of workforce capability, diversity of the workforce, health and wellbeing, remuneration and career pathways.

The survey is voluntary and it should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

Fill in the Census: available for completion until Friday May 5th 2017 at http://vicfvcensus.questionpro.com/.

Migrant services workforce plays a vitally important role in preventing and responding to family violence. This is a landmark opportunity for workforces to have a voice on the key issues affecting them, and to shape the Industry Plan.

The census is designed for everyone who plays a role in primary prevention and in responding to family violence. In addition to the crucial work done by the specialist family violence sector and primary prevention sector, workforces right across the health, education, justice and community sectors all intersect with family violence and primary prevention in unique ways, and this census will help Government to understand this better.

Responses are confidential as between the participant and survey administrator.

For participants - participating in the workforce census may raise sensitive issues for those who have encountered family violence. Participating in the survey may also raise issues in relation to your, or your employee's role in preventing and responding to family violence. There are a number of helplines and support services that can be contacted. Information about this can be found at http://www.vic.gov.au/familyviolence/family-violence-support.html.

Further information relating to the workforce census and a range of Frequently Asked Questions can be found at online at http://www.vic.gov.au/familyviolence/workforce-census.html.

LMWA AMAV | LUNCH TALK | Global Conflict & Need for Justice | An Interfaith Lunch for Women | Saturday 13 May 2017 | 11am for 11.30am-2pm

[Edited extract from public address]

An interfaith lunch to bring women of all faiths together to engage in a meaningful dialogue and infuse mutual understanding between their beliefs.

Islam teaches human beings to act with justice. We must pursue the rights of others with the same zeal and determination that we pursue our own rights. We should broaden our horizons and look at what is right for the world, rather than what is only right for us.
This enlightened principle is the key to solving the problems of today's world and to transform all forms of hatred into peace, justice and mutual respect.

IPL&PWF | RESPONSE | US Executive Order on “Energy Independence and Economic Growth” | 30 March 2017

[Edited extract from public address]

Interfaith Organizations Protest US President’s Executive Order on Coal and Environmental Rollbacks

President Donald Trump’s actions this week to reverse the steady progress being made in confronting the challenge of climate change are not only alarming and dangerous; these actions are immoral.
“Religious and spiritual communities and people of conscience across the earth must commit themselves to work together to stand against the President’s irresponsible and unethical actions…actions that threaten human beings everywhere, that endanger living beings across the globe, that put the earth at peril,”
Dr. Larry Greenfield, Executive Director of the Parliament of the World’s Religions.
Interfaith Power & Light and The Parliament of the World’s Religions have joined together to express deep concern over the Trump Administration’s deceptively-titled Executive Order on “Energy Independence and Economic Growth,” and join with people of faith and conscience within the United States and across the world to protest the President’s actions.

Based on a flawed understanding of both economics and science, the President’s action compromises Americans' health and safety, damages our economy in both the short and long term, and undermines our children’s future wellbeing and security.

The Executive Order blatantly and callously plays on real fears and economic pain while it puts the benefit of a few of the richest Americans ahead of the needs and rights of the vast majority and offers no real solutions or help to those in economic distress.  Its purported “benefits” are ephemeral, exaggerated or nonexistent.

The Clean Power Plan that the President wants to reverse and rollback has important provisions to move the United States toward reliable, affordable and renewable energy and energy efficiency, while preventing as many as 3,000 premature deaths and almost 100,000 asthma attacks per year by 2030. The CPP is helping to bring the benefits of clean energy, like good jobs and lower energy bills to consumers in every community. This carefully crafted plan, which is now in jeopardy, had the input of millions of Americans through the public comment process, and it has support from industry leaders.

The other elements of the President’s Executive Order are as pernicious as dismantling the Clean Power Plan. The sweeping order attempts to undo methane standards for oil and gas operations, stop federal agencies from considering the imminent and demonstrable impact of climate change in their decisions, and opens up federal lands for coal mining and fracking.

The cumulative impact of this Executive Order will harm the economy, reduce jobs, endanger the health and safety of communities, take decision-making away from states and communities, and lead to wasteful spending of federal funds, internationally and domestically.

Its promises are false, but the damage it will cause will be very real.

This issue goes to the heart of our spiritual values and our call to promote justice, protect life, and to be good stewards of Creation. Over the past decade, important progress has been made: Federal actions have helped curb pollution from power plants, raised mileage standards and made our cars more fuel efficient and helped communities avoid impacts of climate change. We have much more to do, and we should be building on our progress, not rolling them back.

Global warming threatens the Earth and disproportionately harms the most vulnerable among us. That’s why climate change is a common factor in all environmental justice issues, and an urgent priority for people of faith. Although it affects everyone, poor and vulnerable communities that contributed least to creating this problem bear the brunt of its impacts. From devastating drought in sub-Saharan Africa to powerful storms that wipe out coastal communities, to deadly air pollution, it’s the poor who suffer “first and worst.”

Faith communities will fight these reactionary measures every step of the way. We will use energy efficiently, install renewable energy on our facilities, and build climate resilient communities. We will support those most in need and those who bear the brunt of climate impacts, and encourage and help those most responsible for climate change to increase their efforts.

The choices we make today will shape the world in which our children will live. We have a responsibility to ensure that those choices are guided by our values as people of faith.
“This executive order is shocking to anyone who cares about future generations and the right to breathe clean air.  We have struggled for many years to secure a healthy and safe future for our children and grandchildren by responding to the urgent threat of climate change.  For anyone who believes in God and believes that God put us here to look after the garden, stewarding Creation is a moral imperative.  All of the world’s great religions teach that caring for our Earth is a responsibility, and that we must serve the poor and vulnerable. It is a sin to knowingly harm Creation and endanger our air and water.  Is this what our president intends to do— sin against God? This is a shameful day in our country’s history.”

IOV | FESTIVAL | In One Voice | 19 March 2017 | 11am - 5pm

[Edited extract from public address]

It’s NOT just about the bagels and cheesecake at this year’s Jewish Cultural Street Festival.

The annual In One Voice festival will include an impressive concert line up, an art exhibition, craft stalls, community stalls, a bagel-eating competition, a cheesecake bake-off, cooking demonstrations and a traditional egg and spoon race.

Ms Weizman said the concert would showcase an “amazing array of talent within the Jewish community”, including the Bashevis Singers (featuring Husky Gawenda) singing Yiddish tunes.
“We’ll also be hearing from Jewku’ladies, a group of women who have taken up the ukulele under the guidance of Karen Feldman, and many, many choirs — some from schools (Sholem Aleichem College, The King David School, Bialik College, and Mt Scopus MC) and others from the community,” she said.

Expect a day of sensory overload as you walk through the sounds, taste and experiences of everything that’s Jewish in Melbourne. Although In One Voice is a great celebration of Jewish culture, open to everyone to attend.

CoPP&TWC | TALK | A.C. Grayling: The Origins and Future of Humanism | Thursday 6 April 2017 | 7.30pm–8.30pm

[Edited Extract from public address]

‘Humanism is the philosophy that you should be a good guest at the dinner table of life.’

In recent years, the eminent British philosopher A.C. Grayling has been a respectful and emphatic voice within the New Atheist movement. During his distinguished career, he’s celebrated ideals of human rationality and progress, arguing for humanism as a powerful, practical alternative to religion. The author of more than 30 books, including What Is Good?, The God Argument and The Age of Genius, Grayling has articulated these values with academic rigour and eloquence.

In this talk, Grayling will define humanism and outline its roots in the philosophy of classical antiquity. He’ll make a case for a universal ethics – one that honours human individuality, freedom and dignity – that can overcome the shortcomings and restrictions of organised religion.

Part lecture, part discussion – spend an evening with this exceptional philosopher for an invigorating perspective on what it means to be human, and humanist.

PWR | ADDRESS | Hate has a history. And it extends into the present | Thursday 23 February 2017

[Edited extract from public address]

Hate has a religious history. And that religious history also extends into the present.

But hate has its challengers, too, both secular and sacred, both civic and religious, in the past and the present.

Recent and current political campaigns and political reigns have stoked the embers of hate, but some political leaders have also stirred the oracles of reconciliation and harmony.

All religious and spiritual communities, and individuals of faith and spirit, must now decide again, as the old hymn puts it, "which side are you on?"

Silence and inaction is not an option.

Thanks to what is most sacred for the communities of faith that historically have been the victims of hate for taking the lead in showing us all what it means to choose compassion, solidarity, and mutuality.

Thanks to the Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Indigenous, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Pagan and all of our sister communities rising in love for showing us the way, not just with words but even more importantly with actions.

See below some of the reports of those words and actions.

The Parliament of the World's Religions hopes these examples will provoke you to speak your own words and enact your own commitments in this time of heightened hate.

And we at the Parliament ask that you forward to us other examples in your own communities so that we, in turn, can share them with the world. Please send these incidents of love and compassion, justice and peace to info@parliamentofreligions.org.

We Amplify the Thousands of People Joining Their Prayers, Bodies, Dollars, Words and Actions Across Communities to Unite Faiths Against Hate

With Hope,
Larry Greenfield & Rob Sellers
Executive Director and Board Chair of the Parliament of the World’s Religions
