CITC | GATHERING | Online for Vigil of Peace and UN International Day Of Peace | Wednesday 21 September 2021 | 6-6.30pm

[Edited extract from public address]

A world where compassion, kindness, empathy and respect are the ruling forces. The 2022 theme "End Racism – Build Peace" is an invitation to reflect and act on the kind of world we want to live in now and to create for our future generations.

On UN Peace Day, we invite you to join community leaders from all backgrounds and come together, in unity, to light a candle for this vision.

This half hour peace-filled event, including messages of hope and a gentle guided meditation, will celebrate and reinforce compassion, resilience, courage and hope within each one of us, within the community – and for our world.

We hope that you are able to join us and make your own contribution to peace.

21 Reflections on Peace: Sept 1st - 21st

Create a peaceful habit by using these specially created and contributed commentaries in the run up to 21st Sept! These 5 minute Reflections can be accessed via:
  1. Soundcloud here
  2. Daily on instagram here
  3. Daily via WhatsApp - text us with the word 'peace' on +61406371894 - to receive a daily reflection sent by 6.00am. (NB. Add this to your contacts to receive these - and no need to text us again if already on our list).

Pause for Peace at Noon

Each day at noon, people of all faiths and none use this ‘Universal Prayer for Peace’. This forms a wave of pure wishes, prayer and hope rippling each day around the globe.
Lead me from death to life,
from falsehood to truth;
lead me from despair to hope,
from fear to trust;
lead me from hate to love,
from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart,
our world, our universe.
This prayer is an adaptation of a famous mantra from the Hindu Upanishads, translated by Satish Kumar, a Jain Monk. You might like to join us in holding this prayer and intentions for peace every day at noon this month - so set your alarm clocks! :)

Spread Awareness of These Events

Calm in the City is a not-for-profit venture which listens and engages with the city communities to bring calm into the heart of the city. We would appreciate the support of any individuals or organisations in spreading awareness of this supportive event for the community. With all the best wishes, take care – and in peace,

VMC | UPDATING | Migrant Women in Business showcase, free mental health workshop, register your voice with ABC News and more | Tuesday 30 August 2022

[Edited extract from public address]

Message from the Chairperson

I've been delighted in recent weeks to receive positive feedback on the content of these Community Updates. I hope the information we have been including has been relevant and useful to all readers. Please encourage your networks to subscribe if they haven't already - and we welcome any suggestions for what we can include in future newsletters!

We are proud to use this platform to provide you with important information but also to support advocacy efforts, community services and increase the recognition and visibility of the great work going on in multicultural communities.

I was excited to watch the 10 winning films and those receiving an honorary-mention in the 2022 Multicultural Film Festival premiere screening last week. Not only were the films of an exceptional professional standard, the stories were funny, heart-warming and heart-wrenching. Representation on screen is so important for our communities and being able to see this while showcasing multicultural talent was an honour.

On a solemn note, I would like to draw our collective attention to the devastating floods in Pakistan and the ongoing impact on Victoria's Pakistani community. On behalf of the VMC, our thoughts are with you during this extremely difficult time. Please seek out the support needed from our broader multicultural and multifaith community, who are always ready to come together during hardship.

Finally, I'd like to invite you to register for the VMC's Overseas Qualification Unit webinar Wednesday evening. This is an important information session for those who seek to have their overseas qualifications recognised in Australia. You can find more details about this in an item below.

Until we next meet, take care and stay well.

It's Your Chicago Parliament to Create, Answer the Call for Programs

On Monday 3 October 2022 the Call for Programs for the 2023 Parliament of the World's Religions is coming to a close.

In a recent blog, Parliament Staff explored the legacy of the City of Chicago in the global interfaith movement, the critical importance of defending freedom and human rights, and the call to communities and individuals to make the 2023 Convening their own.

"Make no mistake: this conference does not present the notion of religious freedom as a shelter for the nationalist or anti-woman lobby among faith communities, it rather walks the line of religious freedom as a human right...But it’s also convening in a moment to celebrate that at 130 years, the Parliament is still growing, holding space in new hearts, and continuing to impact generations that only knew of a Parliament of the World’s Religions in historical memory.

It’s now their Chicago Parliament to create."
Don't miss the opportunity make your mark in the 2023 Parliament Convening, make history as part of the cohort of presenters at the Parliament of the World's Religions!

Further, he – and we – support the critical work of the IAEA to safeguard the operations in Zaporizhzhia.

Global Ethic Census Aims to Gain Insights & Explore Commitment

The Parliament of the World's Religions' signature document, Towards a Global Ethic: An Initial Declaration will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year. The world has changed in many ways since “the Global Ethic” was first endorsed at the 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions, and in the run-up to the anniversary celebrations we are asking anew: Who is “the Global Ethic” for? How does “the Global Ethic” foster interfaith collaboration and action? What must our timeless moral traditions now speak into 21st century realities?

All members of the public with a general interest in ethics are invited to partner with us in this important re-evaluation by taking the first-ever Global Ethic Census, now live on our website.

ECCV | ISSUING | eBulletin #27 | August 2022

[Edited extract from public address]

It was an honour for ECCV to be part of a panel at the AFAC22 conference in Adelaide sharing knowledge and insights on the importance of engaging and collaborating with multicultural communities to improve emergency response and management outcomes.

This has been at the core of our work with the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) in establishing the Multicultural Emergency Management Partnership. It was a great opportunity to showcase this award-winning initiative with key stakeholders from across the country.

The need for a community-led response is also key to the reform of Victoria’s mental health system. Through the Diverse Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Grants Program, ECCV will be establishing a state-wide multicultural mental health Network to guide the reform process and ensure our mental health system is culturally safe, inclusive and responsive to the needs of our diverse communities.

With the national Jobs and Skills Summit on the horizon, there has been much public debate about the direction of Australia's immigration policies. The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on the Australian economy's reliance on migrant workers and the challenges they face.

As we focus on the current workforce and skills shortages, we need to address the broader visa and immigration policy implications. ECCV's recent submission to the Australian Government's Humanitarian Program 2022-23 makes important recommendations for a path that ensures Australia meets its international obligations to protect the rights of migrants and refugees.

Eddie Micallef, Chairperson

ESTABLISHING | New Mental Health Network

ECCV is establishing a Multicultural Mental Health Network as part of the Victorian Government's ongoing reforms of the mental health system. The network will address the Royal Commission's recommendations to make the mental health system culturally safe and inclusive, and provide a platform for agencies, researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience to inform policy and system changes.

COLLABORATED | AFAC22 conference panel in Adelaide

ECCV Acting CEO Jiembra Sheils took part in a panel this week at the AFAC22 conference. The panel was a fantastic opportunity to discuss the importance of empowering our diverse communities to engage in emergency management, and showcase how this co-design approach led to greater collaboration between emergency services and multicultural communities through our MEMP project with VCOSS.

SUBMITTED | To the Humanitarian Program

ECCV has made a submission this month to the Australian Government's Humanitarian Program 2022-23, which reflects long-standing concerns about the direction of the country's immigration policy. The submission makes a number of key recommendations, including increasing our refugee intake to 30,000, and urgently abolishing temporary visas for people who arrive by boat.

VTMH | WEBINAR | Working in partnership with consumers towards a recovery and rights based mental health system | Wednesday 21 September 2022 | 3-4pm

[Edited extract from public address]

The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System recommended that non legal advocacy services should be available to all consumers who want it and hence the need for an opt out system.

VTMH seminars are open to individuals, from all disciplines and working in all sectors, who are based in Australia and interested in diversity and mental health.
Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) is a free state-wide non legal advocacy service for people at risk of or subject to compulsory treatment in Victoria.

    Speakers
    • Helen Makregiorgos, Civil Justice Program, Victoria Legal Aid
    • Simona, Lived Experience Expert, Victoria Legal Aid
IMHA has been working with culturally and linguistically diverse communities for the past 7 years and identified that these communities are often not able to access culturally safe mental health services.

The Royal Commission recommendation will provide opportunity for people from these communities to access non legal advocacy services that can support them to understand and enact their rights, including their rights to mental health services that are culturally safe and responsive.

PWR | UPDATING | Of Course We Chose Chicago! The 2023 Chicago Parliament Is Yours to Create | Saturday 20 August 2022

    [Edited extract from public address]

    Of Course We Chose Chicago!

It is important to celebrate those who built a city. The dreamers and doers who transformed Chicago for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition into an iconic World’s Fair City left behind gifts that cemented Chicago as a premier place to be, to see, to be seen, and fully experience.

That Chicago, the one you know about, have visited (or hope to) is beloved for so many reasons: Chicago is opulent, jazzy, ethnically rich, culturally quite specific, culinarily genius, artistically significant, picture perfect from the Lake, an industrial force….your kind of town, worthy of all its praise. Its people living up to the challenge to make it worthy, safe, and prosperous for all...

    Beyond a Birthplace

One champion helping steer the Parliament of the World’s Religions toward making the 9th gathering a historic moment for Chicago is the senior advisor to Mayor Lori Lightfoot on faith initiatives Rev. Vance Henry. Henry is a longtime public servant in the mayor’s office synonymous with his work bridging community and faith-based initiatives with the support of multiple mayoral administrations.

Henry said, “Chicago is a world-class city that boasts a reputation from its earliest days as a hub of economic, civic, cultural and religious life for the growth of the country. At the heart of the strength, growth, and vitality of Chicago is the religious character and values of the citizens that call Chicago home.”

The Parliament’s call for advancing human rights mirrors what interfaith and religious communities could be called to focus on across the neighborhoods of Chicago.

Those visiting next year will witness that “Peacemaking is the business of the faith communities in this city,” Henry said, before continuing to share his vision of how the 2023 Parliament can benefit the city, as its interfaith networks grapple with difficult times:
“We have to lift up how we are meeting the needs of those who are unsafe, food insecure, and homeless.”
At a busy juncture of organizing, the Parliament of the World’s Religions is well positioned to create history in the 2023 gathering with the support of city partners which includes Mayor Lori Lightfoot herself, who was gracious in helping to announce that the Parliament “chose Chicago” and welcome those planning to visit next year. She recently shared with Henry that she “is proud to celebrate the vision, efforts, and leadership of the Parliament of the World's Religions as they work hard to host the 130th year Anniversary Event in its birthplace here in Chicago.”

Let’s Make the Chicago Parliament’s Third Act the Best Yet

By 2023, organizers hope a 9th Parliament of the World’s Religions will be remembered in keeping with the legacy of earlier convenings. Reaching “most significant yet” is a thrill to imagine.

Key Performance Indicators may say the Parliament featured the biggest mainstream audience to date, secured enough funding, and garnered positive global media coverage. But it’s also convening in a moment to celebrate that at 130 years, the Parliament is still growing, holding space in new hearts, and continuing to impact generations that only knew of a Parliament of the World’s Religions in historical memory.

It’s now their Chicago Parliament to create.

CHUFFED | RAISING | Awareness and Funds for metal detectors in Ukraine | Saturday 20 August 2022

    [Edited extract from public address]

More than 12 million Ukrainian refugees have been displaced inside and outside of Ukraine. They want to go home.

But it is estimated that MILLIONS of landmines have been left across vast areas of Ukraine and that de-mining operations could take decades.

Canberra resident Nathan Burraston, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help Aussies fund quality metal detectors and get them into the hands of troops on the ground in Ukraine.
"I learnt about the problem concerning landmines in Ukraine and decided to come up with a solution to help in some way. We have coordinated a supplier, a discount, and a transport means to provide some humanitarian relief - now I need your support."
Nathan has already managed to raise over $25,000 of the $39,000 needed. Can you chip in and help get the next crate of metal detectors on the way to Ukraine?

VMC | UPDATING | Free webinars on engaging multicultural communities, Multicultural Youth Network application deadline extended and more | Tuesday 16 August 2022

    [Edited extract from public address]

    Message from the Chairperson

I was delighted to join the Karen community yesterday morning in Wyndham, for a wrist-tying ceremony, hosted by the Australian Karen Organisation. This is an important ceremony within the Karen community, which is said to cast away bad spirits and lead to a peaceful life.

It was inspiring to see many young people in cultural dress, proudly dancing and taking part in the event. Preserving the culture of multicultural communities is an important part of the VMC's role, and young people often lead the way in this work.

It is our hope that the VMC's Multicultural Youth Network (MYN) will create more leadership opportunities for young people who have developed strong connections to their community. The MYN is a fantastic way to represent the concerns of young people in your community and ensure their voices are heard. The deadline for expressions of interest to join the network has been extended to 11.59pm Monday 29 August 2022.

It is an exciting time to be launching the MYN, in light of another launch - the Victorian government's Youth Strategy. Part of the MYN's role will be to promote this strategy and to explore ways to implement the recommendations. I warmly invite you to read about the youth strategy in the newsletter item below, and to share it with your networks.

Until we next meet, take care and stay well.
    Viv Nguyen AM, Chairperson

Finally, a reminder that this is the last week to submit a nomination to recognise the work of an individual or organisation for the 2022 Multicultural Awards for Excellence. Nominations close Sunday 7 August.

I see and hear about excellence in multicultural communities every day - it's important that we recognise and award these efforts. As mentioned before, representation matters.

PROFILING | Port Phillip Lions Club

A word from the Club President- Sue McGowan.
Hello – now that we are out and about do you have some spare time in your life and are wondering what to do with it?

Have you considered joining a local service club, such as the Lions Club of Port Phillip. We are a small but passionate club who do our best to make the lives of others near and far easier. We have been serving this area for many years now and in fact Lions Australia celebrates its 75th Birthday this year.

You have probably met us at Bunnings sizzling sausages – do you ever wonder what happens to the funds we raise.

Locally, we donate to schools and charities (St Kilda Gateway, St Kilda Mums, Brigidine Refugee projects, St Silas Church, Community BBQs, Smith Family and Share the Dignity and others). If you know a resident of a local aged care facility, you may have seen our gifts (Easter, Mother and Father’s Day)  that we distribute annually as well as Christmas gifts to those in receipt of delivered meals.

We make donations to the Lions Bushfire and Flood appeals(Both at an international, state and local level), Lions Cord Blood Foundation, Prostate Cancer Research, Seeing Eye and Assist Dogs and as the result of the funds raised at our last Sausage Sizzle,  we donated $1500 to Childhood Cancer Research. At our next business meeting we will be discussing donating $1000 to Licola ( Lions holiday village for disadvantaged children) to replace blinds and curtains. If you are a handyman there may be an opportunity to assist in maintenance.

Life is not just a Sausage Sizzle, we meet twice a month (1st and 3rd Wednesday) for a social and business meeting as well as meeting for coffee and dog walks on an ad hoc basis. With a mixture of employed and retired members we have a wide range of interests so why not come a long and see if you would like to join us make someone’s life a little better.

If you would like to have an informal catch up, please feel free to call Sue McGowan (Club President) on 0409 404 816 – if I don’t answer your call, please leave a message with your details and contact number and I will return your call.

Another option is to follow us on Facebook
